Whole House Water Filter

Aug 14, 2008
The hot water heater is generally connected to the main water line after the whole house water filter. The kitchen, showers, toilets, laundry, faucets and baths are where the treated water is dispensed, in addition to being provided throughout the house via water dispensers, after being cleansed, when a whole house water filter is attached with the main water line of the house.

The city's water utility or the blueprint of the house may prove to be of assistance, when a problem is faced regarding provision of clean water in gardens. Some people may have had a sprinkler system installed in their gardens and need clean water for that. The problem may be on account of the main water line having been divided into two branches i.e. the 'yard' and the 'house' in the ground at the house's front side or in the house's foundation slab.

In any particular case, the requirement for a particular kind of whole house water filter may be determined by the different types of contaminants that may be contained in the water. The water has to be cleaned and it is important that all that has to be cleaned out of it be found out about. In water that municipalities supply, the typical contaminants that are found include chemicals, sediment and the minerals that cause hardness. In private wells, the water generally has contaminants that include iron and other metals, sediment and minerals that cause hardness.

To have the water tested is important, for exact determination of its composition. If one submits a request, the municipal water utilities usually provide an analysis of the water. In the case of a private well, a local laboratory can conduct the test for analysing the water. Assistance may also be obtained from the county officials, since the local wells and the contaminants found in their water is an area in which they usually have experience.

Before a whole house water filter is acquired, it is important that the following should be carefully examined:

- Rate of Flow: Flow rate is termed as the quantity of water that is available for requirements like the toilet, dishwasher, heater for hot water, shower, etc. Usually, the measurement units are gallons per minute (GPM). The calculation of requirement can be aided by the printed demand ratings that the appliances and toilets have. The requirement for showerheads is 2.5-5gpm whereas for toilets it is 5gpm and 3gpm for dishwashers. Uninterrupted and comfortable pressure of water has to be maintained, when usage is at the maximum level. Although the maximum may go up to 40gpm, the minimum requirement is, typically, 10gpm. So, those standards have to be met by a whole house water filter.

- Size of the filter: The pressure is likely to be greater and more water likely to flow, when the service interval is longer and the filter is larger. Pressure and GPM are impacted greatly by the port size. A filter of 4.5" x 10" may be appropriate and pressure fall-offs are likely to be infrequent in the case of condos or small houses, especially when the sediment levels are low. The filter size that is ideal is 4.5" x 20" for most homes.

- Life of the filter: The sediment filter's life is impacted by the sediment's quantity and quality. Carbon filter cartridges of 4.5" x 20" are likely to remain useful for the cleansing of 100,000-150,000 gallons of water, when the municipality supplies water in a normal way. A stand-alone carbon filter with a carbon bed can provide trouble-free use for a longer time-period, if there is a backwashing valve and a back wash cycle that is regular.

- Size of the port: There is minimal droppage in pressure, when the whole house water filter that is being used has 1 inch ports and a 4.5" x 20" filter. Few problems are likely to be encountered, when a 1 inch ported system is utilized for a home with 5/4 inch piping. One inch is the ideal port size for a whole house water filter.
