What to Sell Online When Your Garage is Empty

Aug 17, 2007
Thousands of dollars worth of products are sold on the massive eBay site and other online auctions every hour of the year.

So we logically ask, how are people getting all these items to sell? By now they have emptied their closets and garages.

Even if they have exhausted all their primary product sources, finding stock to sell online is still relatively easy. Several sources are available, at this time, for those who want to make some, or a lot of cash selling online.

Your Home Stuff Disposition;
Many garages and basements have not been cleared of all the saleable junk. Weekend garage sales are getting to be popular places to find items to sell the last few years. Some of the eBay authorized trainers have a lot of us going out to garage sales, every summer weekend we can, to hunt for more items to sell.

Sales in higher income areas tend to net more quality merchandise such as fancy clothes, high end furniture, and antiques. Do not let this discourage you. Do not neglect an average area Joe or Jane garage sale. You never know what unique items will be unearthed regardless of the neighborhood.

As recently as a month ago, in Michigan, an early edition, high price value book about the famous Flying Wallendas trapeze, swing and high wire walking team was found at a garage sale for five dollars. It was presented to the high wire artists by a twelve year old boy, who bought it.

In a very kind and unselfish act at their show, he gave it to the high wire artists. The lesson here is to always have your mind open and alert to dramatic buys at all garage sales.

The best time to go to these sales is toward the end of the day. Homeowners will be more inclined to sell you merchandise at rock bottom prices rather than having to pack up unsold items. They will be glad to save their labor time after a long day.

The next place to look is through your own garage and closets to find items to sell online. You may be harboring old clothes, books, Cds, and toys that you have not looked at for years. That will bring in a few dollars online.

Offer to help your friends and family get rid of their unwanted junk by selling on consignment. This business starts growing fast for some.

You sell their stuff and keep twenty five percent of the profits. Local retailers may also agree to let you sell their overstocks and returned merchandise on consignment as well. This is a very real option for you.

Buy Online and Sell Online;
Finding merchandise to sell online is as easy as buying it from the same online source. eBay is an excellent place to find everything from antiques to huge lots of merchandise that you can buy and resell at a profit.

You can do this with time and effort. The nice part about this is that you do not have to spend hundred or thousands of hours, of your time, doing it.

Locate other online sources by using search terms, on Google or almost any search engine such as wholesale liquidators, closeout dealers, and drop shipping services.

These same sources can also be found in common print media including the Yellow Pages and classified ads in newspapers, trade magazines, and free weekly publications.

Creative Auction Action; unclaimed, slightly damaged, marred and repossessed merchandise can be purchased at freight claims and government auctions. Check out the Yellow Pages for contact information and newspaper classified section for upcoming sales to attend and possibly make reselling after buying purchases.

There are storage unit operations in many locations these days. The storage company regularly auctions off the contents of unpaid rental units. Although the contents are sold sight unseen, there are probably enough sale worthy items inside to let you break even.

Make hard nosed cheap offers and be ready to walk away if you do not get an excellent price. To sell at the right price you must always buy anything at the right price.

Estate auctions are another good source for finding stock to sell online. Like garage sales, high income and even lower income estates yield the greatest finds, but gems can be found regardless of the net worth of the estate. These sales are advertised in your regular newspapers.

Drop shipping is easy, hands off and a realistic way to sell online. You merely send the order to the manufacturer or distributor and they ship the product to the customer. No inventory or shipping hassles to worry about. Many thousands of sellers are doing a good job, with their own business, with this method of sales.

Local Events like bazaars, flea markets, festivals and other regular events are good sources for everything from unique handmade crafts to valuable collectibles. Like garage sales, stop by near closing time to get deep discounted deals.

Check with the local convention and visitor bureau to find out about scheduled trade shows that are open to the public. You will be able to buy from manufacturers and sales reps selling the latest and most demanded products on the market.

Offshore Action;Asia is a good source for carefully finding merchandise to sell online. However, the red tape, rampant dishonesty overseas and cost of contacting sources there can be a hassle loaded with unnecessary risk.

Your best bet is to hook up with a manufacturing rep who has overseas connections. There are enough available home grown, meaning American, Canadian and British sources for locating products to sell, to make this option unnecessary.
