Get More Fiber in Your Diet Using These Quick and Easy Tips!

Do you need to get more fiber in your diet? Did you know that men are supposed to have at least 35 grams of fiber a day and women are to have 25 grams? Fiber offers some incredible benefits to our health. Not only does it keep us feeling full and satisfied, but it can help lower our cholesterol levels and our blood sugar levels.

There are many quick and easy tips for adding more fiber to your diet. Just be careful, you don't want to add too much too quickly. Doing this can result in bloating, cramping, and gas. If you experience these symptoms, slow down the addition of fiber and add just a little more each day.

You can begin to get more fiber by adding a high-fiber cereal to your daily food intake. If you add fruit to your cereal, you'll get a double dose! Think of creative ways to include bran and whole-grains into your favorite meals. These two items can be easily added to salads, casseroles, muffins, and meatloaf.

Make fruit an important part of your day in order to get more fiber. Don't peel off the skin and don't substitute fruit juice. Be creative. Add fruit to salads, smoothies, desserts, muffins, and sauces for beef, pork, and fish.

Eating two nutritious snacks a day that are packed with this fantastic nutrient is another easy way to enhance your fiber total. Low-fat popcorn is a very satisfying and delicious snack. Dried fruits and raw vegetables will also help you meet your goal.

Eat a salad every night with dinner. Add a variety of raw, fresh vegetables and fruit to keep them interesting. Top your salad with 2 teaspoons of olive oil and lemon juice or vinegar. Try eating salads in creative ways. Put a handful of salad on a piece of fish before you bake it. Add salad to the top of white pizza. Include a handful of salad in a whole-wheat wrap with raw or sauteed vegetables.

Eat whole-grained pasta instead of white pasta. If you haven't tasted it in awhile, it's come a long way. It is truly delicious! Choose whole-grain breads. If you don't like the taste, work up to them by changing from white to one of the new "whole-wheat white" breads first, or eat a sandwich with one slice of white and one slice of whole-grain.

Learn to love the skin of your potato. There are just too many nutrients there for it to go in the trash can. Omit the high-fat toppings and squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice on the potato for a wonderfully fresh flavor. Add sweet potatoes to your menu. If they're not your favorite, start adding them by making oven fries. Cut the potatoes and toss them with 1 teaspoon of olive oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 30 minutes.

Follow these easy tips and you'll satisfy your daily fiber requirements in no time! But a word of caution, fiber absorbs many times its own weight in liquid. It's essential to drink plenty of water. Shoot for at least 6-8 glasses each day. This excess bulk formed by fiber and liquid helps to keep your digestive system healthy.
