The Challenges To Create A Blog On A Self Hosted Domain

Aug 15, 2008
Most people start out blogging with one of the free blogging software that can be found all across the Internet. But soon enough they realize in order to be properly recognized in the blogging community, they need to create a blog on a self hosted domain instead. While this might not be an issue for a private blogger, it is important for a business. However, mention self hosted blog to an average business owner and they run a mile, giving up before they even started.

This is a common behavior which I see all across the Internet. Fueled by the belief that it is too hard to create a blog on a self hosted domain, many simply give up and make do with low quality blogs on a free domain.

Naturally, if you are trying to brand your business, this isn't helpful at all, because the message you effectively communicate is that you are short on money, slack, or can't be bothered with a proper business portal.

Some bloggers don't see the value of running a self hosted domain either, but let me tell you there is tremendous value in doing that. See, a free blog doesn't give you optimized search engine keyword strings. Because of their nature they are often doing quite the opposite and to this day I would be pressed to see many free blogs ho can compete with the other ones.

It is possible though. But only with intricate knowledge on how the search engines work, knowledge about back links and the way Google indexes your posts. Only the die hard bloggers can achieve this by intent. Certainly not a total newcomer or intermediate user.

In reality, to create a blog on a self hosted domain isn't really that hard at all. Granted, you will need to learn how to register a domain name, sign up with a web host and then set up a MySQL data base. This will take some time to learn, but becomes easier once you know how.

The premium choice software to create a blog on a self hosted domain is usually WordPress. WordPress is a software that allows you to install your blog after you setup your data base. It is also by far the best software for search engine optimization, which is a must if you want your customers to find you online. WordPress is free to use, but you will need to learn how to install it into your data base. You will also need to learn how to personalize your blog with plugins, widgets and other HTML code. This isn't a suggestion, it's an absolute must if you want to create a blog that ranks well on search engines like Google.

To create a blog with WordPress, you will need one ingredient for sure. That ingredient is time. If you have plenty of time, no problem, you will learn and create a blog that will impress yourself and your customers. If you don't have the time or the nerve to learn all this, find out how easy it becomes when you use the right tools to make your life easier.
