Café Tables: Why Cheap Can Kill Your Business

Aug 16, 2008
You want your business to do well. This is why you need to take a great deal of time and effort to insure that you are purchasing the very best café tables for your business. Cheap and inferior purchases of this size and scope can literally kill your business in more ways than one. You want your customers to view your business as a place of quality. This image is difficult to maintain when you purchase cheap and inferior furniture such as café tables. You want them to walk in and be impressed by your furniture selections and not turn around and walk out the door.

The big question you should be asking is why cheap furniture can kill your business? Your next question should be: what you can do to make sure that this doesn't happen to your business?

Why Does Cheap Furniture Kill Your Business?

Comfort

People want to be comfortable when they eat. They want to have a little elbowroom and want to feel as though their business is appreciated. When you provide tables that are cheaply made it doesn't make them feel comfortable or appreciated. Wobbly tables that are off balance make for a bad impression. Tables that look cheap do not make a good impression either. You want to fill your customers with confidence long before you fill them with food because if you fail to do so you will find that many customers walk right out the door.

Keep in mind that comfort isn't merely a physical state. You want to provide physical and mental comfort to your customers. While tables aren't as vital as chairs for physical comfort cheaper tables may come at heights that are not as comfortable or provide sharper edges that aren't comfortable to small children at the table. You need to consider all of your customers when making decisions as important as the café tables for your business.

Craftsmanship

Shoddy craftsmanship is a bad sign for customers. This is something that many will notice before they even bother to smell the coffee or talk to the wait staff. It is a direct reflection as to the amount of attention you pay to details and the average customer will assume that if you can't be bothered to make sure that the furniture you are paying for is of excellent quality you may not bother to insure that the food you are serving is excellent quality either.

No business is going to survive when it is losing customers it has not yet had a chance to establish. Most restaurants and cafes struggle (at best) for the first three years when business is decent. It is nearly impossible to get off the ground when your first impression on your customers is not a favorable impression and the furniture is the first thing they will see.

Ugly

Believe it or not, diners are picky about certain things and often find that ugly tables are just not appetizing. This isn't to say that all cheap tables are ugly but a good many are less than appealing on a good day. You want furniture that is inviting and warm not furniture that is going to leave potential customers lingering by the door or heading for the heels. Unless you plan to make the majority of your profit on take out business, which is possible though not recommended, you want to find furniture that will be attractive to the vast majority of your customers. Yes, people really do walk out of restaurants over ugly and cheap looking furniture every day.

Improperly Sized

One other major way that cheap furniture can kill you business is by being larger than the measurements claimed or bulkier and requiring more space than you may have realized. This costs you seating inside the café. Others find that the table are not a comfortable (or worse consistent) height and that presents other problems you will need to deal with. The worst though for many café owners that rely on quick table turns and filled seats to keep them going is the fact that they will cost precious seating inside the restaurant because the cheap café tables do not fit properly in the space meaning you have to do without some of the seating you had originally planned to have.

Lack of Repair Options

The really big cost involved in cheap furniture and why it may be killing your business is that repairs or replacements may be non-existent or costly if they do. You may also find that the colors fade unevenly, the cushions are easily torn, the surface is easily scratched, or you are constantly needing to provide support to prevent the table from wobbling. None of these situations are ideal by any means but the fact that the company is unlikely to warranty their merchandise means that you must pay for the repairs or replacements yourself and have the furniture remain an eyesore and (valuable space that is useless to you) until it can be repaired or replaced.

Potential Hazards

One issue that hasn't been mentioned that is important is the liability issue. We live in a very litigious society. Cheap furniture can lead to injuries for which you may be deemed responsible. This is a situation that is best avoided at all costs. Even if the courts rule in your favor going to trial can be a costly process and will cost your business greatly. It is best to purchase furniture that is built to last rather than risking so much by trying to save a few dollars up front. In this instance going cheap can cost you far more than you might have ever imagined.

The furniture you select for your café will reflect greatly upon you and the way you do business. What are your café tables saying about you? This is the question you need to ask before you make the mistake of purchasing cheap café tables that may end up killing your business.
