Glassware Goes Safe For The Streets

Aug 17, 2008
Polycarbonate glasses and glassware are a versatile and tough alternative to standard or traditional glassware, and are becoming more and more popular in drinking establishments and premises throughout the UK. Gone are the old days of plastic glasses being easily recognizable as being made of plastic and looking cheap and cheerful, today the polycarbonate glasses on the market are as good as if not better than real glass due to the virtually unbreakable quality of the materials, coupled together with the look of real glass.

The polycarbonate barware available on the market today is constructed from the same material used in many applications where the strength of polycarbonate is unmatched, such as motorbike crash helmets, bullet proof glass, riot shields and DVDs. Other benefits of polycarbonate over glass is its excellent transparency and reduced weight compared to glass (polycarbonate weighs about one sixth of glass) and also its superior insulating properties in comparison to traditional barware.

Many pubs, clubs and nightclubs are realising the benefits of changing from glass to polycarbonate glasses and these are becoming more popular and ever present in these type of premises, as establishments realise that breakages are becoming a thing of the past as the polycarbonate glass is virtually unbreakable and cannot be smashed no matter how much force is applied to the product, a polycarbonate glass will withstand tonnes of pressure and years of abuse.

Polycarbonate barware can withstand the rigors of a busy environment and is totally dishwasher safe. Many establishments are being advised by their local authorities, police or councils to switch from glass to plastics for safety reasons, as violent incidents involving glass attacks are becoming more frequent and serious in nature. Some pubs clubs or nightclubs have to change to polycarbonate as a requirement of their liquor license.

Many establishments are choosing to use plastic or polycarbonate glassware for their customers taking drinks outside to the smoking area as a dropped polycarbonate glass will not smash when it hits a hard floor surface unlike a traditional glass, this saves the bar staff having to waste time clearing up breakages eliminating the health and safety issues surrounding broken glass and its removal.

Choosing polycarbonate glasses is a much safer option for the customer and staff alike, as an impact from a polycarbonate glass is much safer than an impact from glass as the polycarbonate will not smash on impact and therefore will not cause as much damage to a person as an impact from traditional glass would; making polycarbonate glasses a less offensive weapon in the wrong hands. Anybody who has ever purchased traditional glasses will be aware of the huge range available to choose from, this wide choice of shapes, styles and ranges now also applies to plastic and polycarbonate glassware.

There is a large range of plastic barware now available to choose from including pints and half pints all government stamped and CE marked for serving measured amounts of alcohol, also there are many tumbler or hi-ball type polycarbonate glasses to choose from and also single shot glasses. Wine glasses are also available in all the usual 'wine by the glass' measures with the CE marked line stamped onto the glasses in various sizes.

In short all types of traditional glasses are available in polycarbonate versions with many different ranges to choose from. The question to ask yourself is not why you should change to polycarbonate? Instead ask the question why shouldn't you change to polycarbonate glasses? Yes polycarbonate glasses will be more expensive initially but they will last longer and therefore will not need replacing as often as traditional glasses.
