High Blood Pressure Diet Guidelines

Patients suffering high blood pressure should be very aware of the foods they eat. High blood pressure happens when your heart overworks itself to distribute blood throughout your body. A person's blood pressure becomes high primarily because of clogged arteries. Clogged arteries stop blood from passing freely. As a result, the heart pushes the blood aggressively. At which point, your blood pressure rises.

More than the medicines prescribed by your doctor, you make sure that you follow a good diet if you are suffering from hypertension. There are two general rules when it comes to the creation of high blood pressure diet. The firs rule is to eat the types of foods that could help lower down cholesterol in the blood. The second rule is to eat no or little of the foods that pile cholesterol up. The most common reason for clogged blood vessels and arteries is cholesterol. And so to put your blood pressure back to normal, you have to totally remove bad cholesterol from your body.

Foods for High Blood Pressure

If you're suffering from high blood pressure, you have to follow a certain diet that could help alleviate your condition. Easily put, you need to follow a healthy diet. Eat lesser fats and more vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. These are the main food groups that you should focus on when creating a high blood pressure diet. The American Heart Association suggests a diet of 50% carbohydrates, 25% calories from fat, 10% fiber, and 15% protein. Follow this as your guideline to slowly but surely to make your blood pressure normal. Here are good suggestions:

1. Eat plenty of vegetables.

Vegetables are nutritious foods. These food items can help hypertension patients in managing the effects of their disease. They are healthy alternatives foods that could raise one's blood pressure.

2. Invest on wholegrain.

Six servings of wholegrain every day would do a high blood pressure patient good. All other food items made of wholegrain are also acceptable. Good examples are muesli, brown rice, rye bread, cereals, and oatmeal. Switch to these foods for a better health.

3. Take in lots of fruits and fruit juices.

Do you love fruits? Then you should have no problem with high blood pressure. Just add fruits in your meals and you should be good. Fruits can help a lot in managing blood pressure. Eat four servings or more of fruits daily.

Foods that you should avoid

Follow the strict instructions of your doctor against food groups that can raise your blood pressure. Don't complicate matters by eating foods that could further raise your blood pressure to alarming levels. Here are some food items that you should avoid:

1. Fatty and sugary foods

Oils are fatty foods, including all things that are cooked in it. You should stop yourself from consuming too much of these food items, red meats included. There are healthier meat options such as white meat and lean meat. Sugary foods can trigger high blood pressure as well. As much as possible, avoid these food items for dessert.
