Making The Most of Travelling Across Europe

Aug 17, 2008
Travelling across Europe can prove exciting times and with there being many modes of transport available, this can provide that opportunity to further explore the attractions that Europe has to offer. There are in total 39 member countries to choose from when visiting Europe, with each country having something for everyone to enjoy whether it is a short or long term vacation that is intended.

The main modes of transport available when travelling across Europe has normally been by way of trains, airplanes and buses; perhaps for the more health and environmentally friendly individual a bicycle would also be an option. However, hiring a car to drive across Europe is a particularly useful option and one which is becoming more popular; its flexibility being able to provide that extra independence when planning sightseeing expeditions. After all, it's much easier to venture off the beaten track with a car and also to sporadically pull over and explore your surroundings on a whim - something you can't really manage to do when travelling by alternate means.

When planning a driving trip across Europe, as with any intended journey, it is often advisable to plan your journey before leaving for your chosen destination. There are certain expenses involved, including car insurance, although most hire car brokers will often include car insurance as part of your rental deal. Some car hire brokers will also have a mileage cap, whereby a predetermined number of miles are included in the rental cost of the vehicle, but any additional mileage would be subject to a charge.

Travelling with others can help to spread costs associated with the venture, such as fuel. Petrol costs will likely be a large expense incurred and the prices will vary from country to country in Europe; in that respect, so too will parking costs fluctuate in various locations too. There are also many toll-road charges, depending on which part of Europe you are visiting so it is advisable to have change available in the right currency to allow you to continue your journey with ease.

Depending on where you are planning on visiting, there are different road laws and rules to consider for each country. It is important to note that some car hire companies may not allow you to drive their cars into Eastern Europe, so make sure you research your potential destinations to ensure your specific car and current driving licence meets local laws and regulations.

If car rental is a considered option for travelling across Europe then there are many different types of cars available to choose from, and depending on the duration and number of people involved in your journey, the choice of car will meet your personal needs; whether it's a small, economical vehicle or a family-sized car you are considering renting.

Through careful budgeting and consideration of all the associated factors, driving across Europe in a hire car can be relatively inexpensive and can leave you free to enjoy your road-trip without it feeling like a chore.
