Do Not Let Mold Sneak Into Your Home

Aug 18, 2008
It can sneak up on you when you least expect it. It seems harmless because it is so small, but this microscopic thing packs a mean punch. It can be found both indoors and outdoors. In the wild, it does not pose much of a health risk because it is part of the decaying process.

It is even used in the process and development of certain foods, such as cheese, and used to create Penicillin, a widely-used antibiotic utilized in the treatment of bacterial infections. As if maintaining a clean appearance is not enough, you have to be weary of mold growth, which can occur at any time. All a mold spore needs is just the right amount of moisture to thrive.

Protecting your food from developing mold is simple. Any fresh or cut fruits and vegetables that are stored in the fridge should be covered with plastic wrap or stored in an airtight container. Covering the foods will protect it from any airborne mold spores. Opened cans should not be left in the can. Pour the contents out into a plastic container and seal right away. Any perishable foods, such as meat, milk, cheese, and other frozen foods should be refrigerated as soon as possible.

Leaving these foods out of their recommended storing conditions can encourage mold growth. Any leftover foods should be consumed within 3-4 days. If food does develop mold, discard it. If your bread has developed mold, do not cut the pieces of mold off and eat the "good" parts.

Protecting your home from developing mold may be much more difficult to do because it covers a bigger area. Cleaning your house regularly is a starter. Make vacuuming your home a top priority. Consider the purchase of a vacuum with a HEPA filter, which can supposedly remove over 99% of airborne particles that typically cause allergies. Focus most of the cleaning in rooms where there are sinks and ways for water to travel. Bathrooms should be kept as clean as possible. Bathrooms will either have a vent installed or a window.

Even if the bathroom is not equipped with a ventilation system, consider installing one so that all the moisture can escape. Check constantly for leaky pipes, and promptly clean up any spills thoroughly. The kitchen is another place where mold can grow heavily because of food. Make sure you don't buy too much fresh fruits and vegetables; buy only what is needed by making a food plan for the week. The laundry room should be checked on daily as well for any leaks or excessive moisture.
