Are You Prepared For Flood Water Damage

Aug 18, 2008
A flood in your home could be one of the single most disastrous things that could happen to your property, besides a fire or a tornado shredding it into smithereens. After your home has been flooded, what do you do? If you find that, despite the damage, you are able to salvage your home, then the hard work shall begin. Cleaning up your home is often viewed as a negative thing, but it does not have to be that way. Take this experience as an opportunity to redecorate your home, although you were not planning to do any decorating.

Depending on how extreme the flooding was in your home, some major renovations might be underway. If some of the walls and the roof sustained very heavy damage, then take this as an opportunity to change your floor plan a bit. You know how much you despised that there was a wall that separated your dining room and your living room? Well, here is your chance to knock it down to give that area a fresh new look and create an open floor plan. If parts of your ceiling had to be removed due to heavy damage, then consider tearing the ceiling down as well to create a loft-like feel.

Did you hate that wallpaper that covered the walls in your bathroom but could never find the time to replace it with some new wallpaper or a fresh coat of paint? Now is the time to do it. Consider this as a makeover to your bathroom. The possibilities are endless, and you can use tile, wallpaper, or paint to create a new atmosphere in your bathroom. Assuming you have the know how and the resources to do it, you can even rearrange the "furniture" in your bathroom. Maybe you can move the toilet to where the sink is or you can move the shower to where the toilet is. Be creative, and you will find that the extra effort will be well worth it in the end.

If your floors were covered in carpet, then get rid of it. Carpets, while appealing to some people, can harbor insects, allergens, and mold, which are all bad things to have in your home anyway. There is usually hardwood underneath your carpet. Rent a sanding machine at your local hardware store, buy some varnish, and you will have a beautiful hardwood floor in no time. If you don't want hardwood floors, then maybe you can install tile or some other type of flooring.

The possibilities are endless. Look on the bright side of the situation, and don't focus on the disaster. Look at it as an opportunity to give your home a fresh, new look.
