Stop Bathroom Mold Growth With These Easy Steps

Aug 18, 2008
There was a moment in time when bathing was done in rivers and creeks, and going number 1 and 2 was done in bushes. As civilizations grew, outhouses in backyards were made. The first bathtubs many, many years ago were more like big pools. Everyone bathed together in the same water.

The bathroom has become a sanctuary. The bathroom is a place that is not used only because we need a place to wash ourselves and to rid our body of wastes. It is a room used for relaxation. A common feature in a lot of new homes is a bathtub that can accommodate two people in addition to the stand-up shower next to it. With bigger bathrooms and more features, it is important to maintain a clean environment at all times.

One of the biggest issues with bathrooms is mold. Just when you think it is enough to clean the floors, scrub the toilet and tub, and clean the sink, now you have one more thing to worry about! Mold can be very easy to prevent with a little know-how. Mold flourishes in an environment that is humid and moist. It can thrive anywhere that has moisture. All it takes is a spore, invisible to the naked eye, to find its home on a moist surface, and before you know it, there is mold.

Bathrooms must be equipped with a good ventilation system. Building codes specify that a bathroom must either have an exhaust fan or a window to let moisture out. Sometimes, companies will have both installed as a preventative step. Whenever you are showering or bathing, make sure the exhaust fan is on or the window is open.

If the bathroom is left in unkempt condition, it will definitely grow mold and pose a health risk to you and your family. Maintain a healthy environment by cleaning your bathroom regularly. Wiping down your counters and floors and cleaning your tub, toilet, and sink regularly with a bathroom cleaner is usually good enough. If you want to go that extra mile, use bleach or a disinfectant that is proven to kill germs and bacteria.

It may be difficult to keep the bathroom dry since it is littered with water outlets everywhere. Make sure there is not any resting water on your countertops or on the floors. Depending on what type of flooring you have, it is possible for water to permeate the surface and for mold to start growing underneath. All it takes is a little water behind your toilet or underneath your sink for mold to start growing.
