Self Inspecting Your Home For Mold

Aug 18, 2008
Homes are our safe haven. It keeps us dry when there is rain, and it provides warmth and comfort everyday. Naturally, because our home provides so many things that we too often take for granted, the least we can do for our home is to clean it. After all, we live in it, and living in a dirty and smelly home is very unpleasant. Plus, how clean a person keeps his home is often a direct reflection of how that person's personality is. Cleaning only the surfaces and what is visible to the naked eye is sometimes good enough, but not always. Problems can develop in places where we least expect it. One of the last things we worry about in our home is the development of mold, yet it affects millions of unsuspecting homeowners every year. If you have never inspected your home for mold, then here are some simple steps to teach you how to locate mold, if you have any.

If you have a basement, then you must always check for faulty plumbing and cracks in your foundation. If you find that there is standing water in your basement after it rains, then you need to have someone fix that problem right away. Determine where the water is coming in. If the hole or crack is a small enough job that you can do yourself, then do it yourself. If there are no cracks in the foundation, however, and there is still a lot of moisture in the room, then consider having a ventilation system of some sort installed. If that is out of your budget, then you can purchase a dehumidifier to help with the air circulation and help eliminate extra moisture.

The bathroom needs to be cleaned and checked on often. A little standing water or a little moisture can go a very long way in the development of mold. Some common problem areas are underneath the sink, behind the toilet, and anywhere the vinyl, tile, or other flooring ends. Make sure that the flooring is completely sealed so that water cannot get to the sub-floor, which can, in severe cases, cause your floor to collapse. Another room that is of much concern is the kitchen. Water is heavily used in this room to cook, clean, wash dishes and foods, and so forth. All pipes should be checked on a regular basis to ensure that none of them are leaking. The backside of the fridge is often overlooked but can also have leaks and moisture issues, especially if there is a line of water running to supply water to your fridge for ice and for drinking water.

Checking certain parts of your home will seem time consuming at first but will definitely benefit you, your health, your wallet, and the overall well-being of your home in the long run.
