Do Spiritual Addiction Treatment Programs Work?

Aug 19, 2008
Spiritual methods of addiction treatment have existed since much earlier than the conventional forms of treatment came into prominence. As the name suggests, these programs work by reinforcing a belief and a confidence in the person about self. The spiritual methods are different from faith-based methods of addiction treatment; in that the faith-based treatment methods depend on a person's religious beliefs, while spiritual methods depend on the person's self-confidence. To put it differently, spiritual methods work because they make the person fall in love with himself or herself and create in them the sentiment that they are wrecking their beautiful life by going deeper and deeper into their addiction.

Manner of Functioning of the Spiritual Addiction Treatment Programs

There are some definite patterns that the spiritual programs use for drug addiction treatment. Most of these will use the 12 Step Program that was originally outlined by the Alcoholics Anonymous. However, today, the AA program has been widely accepted throughout the world for various kinds of addiction recovery methods, and the spiritual methods are certainly no exception. They have modified the 12 Step Program to suit their needs in several ways.

The first part of these programs is to help the person overcome his or her denial. This in itself can be a very significant part of the treatment process. People who are addicted to some or the other substance will not want to accept that there is a problem with their lives. They will not want to get into any treatment mode. In that way, they will go on ruining their lives further. The denial overcoming process of the spiritual programs will help the person to realize the importance of self and thus move on further.

Once the patient is ready for the treatment, the program begins with teaching them various therapies and techniques that can help them to keep out of their addiction. These methods can use meditation, relaxation and prayer. People will be counseled in groups and individually to understand their own emotional issues and get out of those. They will be taught how to separate their mental situations from the substance they are abusing. An important realization that is created here is that the substance of abuse is not the solution to their life's problems. When this is done in an emphatic manner, people find it all the more easy to come out of their addictions.

There may sometimes be medicinal methods used too. These medications will be mostly maintenance medications, which are used so that the user will find it easier to snap out of their habits. When a maintenance medication is used, the person does not find as much temptation for the substance as they did earlier. If the patient has been in another form of treatment before, then a stabilizing medication treatment may also be used. However, medication is not the norm in spiritual addiction treatment programs. These may be used only by treatment centers that have a detox or another kind of medicinal approach in their own environs.

Who must not use Spiritual Programs?

Practically speaking, the spiritual programs are suitable for almost everyone that is with an addiction, apart from people who are in much dire straits with their addictions. People who have been abusing the substance for a very long time and using a high amount of it will find these programs unsuitable to their condition. This will be basically because of the strong withdrawal processes that they will experience when they begin to abstain from the substance. These vigorous body reactions need to be treated under medical supervision. There might be other conditions in the people that will need to be looked into professionally. If the person is with a mental illness, even they are not suitable for spiritual treatment programs. They will need something more severe such as an inpatient treatment program with dual diagnosis that can look into their coexisting conditions.

Hence, it is important that people who are strongly addicted to the substance do not use these programs. However, spiritual programs work very well for people whose dependency is to the level of occasional and even frequent abuses of the substance.

Do Spiritual Addiction Treatment Programs work?

Spiritual addiction treatment programs work for the people they are intended to work, and there they work very effectively. These programs help in improving the very lifestyle of such persons. They will not just cure the addiction but they will bring the person on the path of correcting all the wrongs that they may have committed. However, severely addicted persons will need inpatient treatment.
