Relapse Prevention Modes Used By Alcohol Rehab Centers

Aug 18, 2008
Treatment centers for alcohol rehab are acutely aware of one fact, whichever part of the world they are operating in. They know that treatment options such as detox are not helpful for a long-term recovery for an addicted person. Detox is immensely useful for cleaning the person's body of the addiction. The process helps the body of the person to flush out the toxins from within it so that the person can be protected from the health complications that the substance might cause and will move towards recovery better because the elimination process will help them overcome their cravings for the substance. But this process will not be very much helpful to completely cure the addiction.

There is an important reason for that. Addiction is a mental illness, not physical. When a person is made to undergo detox or any other such physical process, it is the physical dependency in the person that is treated. The addiction still remains in the person's mind. What really needs to be done is to remove the addiction from the mind of the person. This is what a carefully planned out aftercare program can do.

That is the reason every person who has undergone an addiction treatment in a detox center is made to go through an aftercare program. The alcohol rehab follows the pattern of detox plus aftercare in any case. The nature of the aftercare is decided upon the extent of the person's withdrawal during the detox treatment. If the withdrawal has been too nasty, the patient is made to go through a residential treatment program for the aftercare, otherwise an outpatient aftercare will suffice.

It is important to know what happens during these aftercare programs. Here is a list of the primary objectives involved:-

1. The patient must not feel a temptation for using the substance (alcohol) again.
2. The patient must go back to his or her earlier lifestyle as much as possible.
3. The patient must be able to lead a fuller life, which will be completely addiction-free.

All these are parts of the relapse prevention strategy. A relapse happens when a person feels a strong urge for using the substance after a treatment process has been completed and actually uses the substance. In most cases, a relapse does occur. In fact, in some very addictive substance abuse treatments such as heroin treatment, it has been found that patients go through ten to twelve relapse processes. This is certainly quite a high number and makes the treatment process quite futile.

So that their efforts don't go in vain, the alcohol rehab centers will take the utmost care that the person does not get into the addiction once again. Most centers will have their own relapse prevention strategy for this purpose. Here we describe a general relapse prevention method that most alcohol rehab centers will use.

1. The first step is to make the person aware that their treatment is not completed with the detox program and that they have a long way to go. The family of the patient is also brought into the picture here and made aware that they will have to work at completely removing the alcohol dependency from the person. Creating awareness in the patient and their family is an important first step in relapse prevention.

2. Counseling follows. First the patient is made aware of what he or she can do whenever there is an urge for alcohol. They are taught how they can train their mind to control their urges. Similarly, the family of the patient is taught certain methods that can be employed when a very strong urge for the substance occurs.

3. The body and mind of the person is strengthened by putting them through various therapies such as massage therapies, spiritual methods such as Yoga, breathing exercises and the like. The intention is to reinforce the positive energies within the person's body so that they can fight any urges that might occur.

4. One very important point is social and professional rehabilitation. The patient is trained on how to get back into a constructive social life by repairing friendships and relationships. They are encouraged to attend social functions and events and make contacts with the right kind of people. If they are interested in taking up a job, they are helped for that too. Some rehab centers have placement services for their treated patients.

A proper relapse prevention strategy is what makes alcohol rehab meaningful. If you are looking for an alcohol rehab option, this is one of the things you must be looking out for.
