Some Points To Remember When Checking Out Options On A Rehab Treatment Program

Aug 18, 2008
If you are looking for a rehab treatment program, there are certain things that become very important to be sure about. Here is a list of things that you must not miss out on.

Make very sure you know how the rehab treatment program works.

There are several different ways in which rehab treatment is conducted nowadays. Some of them have detox while some do without it; some of them have a counseling program while some don't and some of them have a single treatment approach while some use the more popular dual diagnosis treatment approach. With so many differences in the kinds of treatment that might be available from a rehab center, it becomes difficult to be sure of which treatment will be the most suitable for the patient's condition. However, if the patient does not get a program that is suitable for him or her, it can backfire by pushing the person further into the addiction. This is the reason it is extremely important to learn fully well what the program is about.

You can use the website of the rehab center to get this information. Most websites have detailed mentions on the programs and even their FAQ sections can provide several subtle bits of information about the procedure of a program. This could be a good indicator for you to check whether the program will be suited to the patient's condition or not.

Check the licenses and other qualifying information of the rehab treatment program.

No center can provide rehabilitation in any state of the US without a state and/or a federal license. Be on your guard to see whether the program you are joining has its relevant license with it or not. But remember that you will have to check for special licensing requirements also. If you are looking for methamphetamine addiction treatment, for example, you will have to see whether the center has a methamphetamine rehab license or not.

You must also check for the accreditations. If a center is accredited, it means that the center has a good measure of credibility and you can look at it for your treatment requirement. There is a same kind of credibility generated if the center has a good number of affiliates. This only goes to show how well-supported the program is. If the treatment center is unable to provide any part of the treatment, you will still not be stuck because they will use one of their affiliate services.

Also check if the treatment providers themselves are qualified or not. Treatment providers of a rehab program must ideally be qualified through a body such as the American Society of Addiction Medicine or a possible equivalent.

Check out the medication that will be used.

In all kinds of rehab treatment programs, the most important thing is the medication that will provide during the treatment. In fact, most programs are known for the medication that will be used, such as buprenorphine treatment for heroin addiction. This plays an important role because the medication will dictate what way the program will proceed, how expensive it will be and what effects/repercussions it will have.

The best example is making the decision between usage of methadone or buprenorphine for heroin rehab. Both medications are very effective, but methadone is more habit forming than buprenorphine is. However, buprenorphine may not be quite as effective as methadone. It becomes necessary to check out these options.

Become familiar with the way the aftercare will function.

Most people make the mistake of just checking the way in which the detox program will work. However, it is quite necessary to see how the aftercare will work too. The aftercare is the part of the treatment program where the patient is trained on how to stay away from the addiction. This is more important than the actual treatment itself, because this is where the patient actually moves towards a sustaining recovery.

In some treatment centers, there will also be a psychoanalytical aspect of the aftercare. Here the patient will be checked upon for some mental issues that might be instrumental in dragging them into the addiction and keeping them there. See if you get this kind of aftercare if the patient has some psychiatric problems.

It is also good to check in advance whether there will be a family counseling program involved. This is ideal because here families are taught how they can come out of their addiction and how they can actually become important tools in the patient's recovery process from the heroin addiction.
