What exactly are dust mites? Are they harmful to my health? My doctor said I might be allergic to dust mites what does this mean? Many questions are asked about dust mites, but many are left unanswered. Hopefully in this article I will be able to shed some light on this fairly mysterious topic.

What Are Dust Mites? Many people know dust mites exist but know very little about them. Dust mites are living organisms that feed, breathe and defecate just like any other animal. They are actually from the spider family and have eight legs just like a spider. They live on average for about 30 days for a male and 2 months for an impregnated female whom lays around 100 eggs during its entire lifespan.

What is the Size of a Dust Mite? Microscopic in size, dust mites are not visible to the human eye. The average size of a dust mite is approximately a half a millimeter large.

What is the Amount of Dust Mites That Live Within My House? It is impossible to come up within exact amount of dust mites that are found within your house, but it is known that in the average mattress millions of dust mites take residence. Dust mites thrive in your pillows, sheets, comforters, carpeting, couches, and chairs.

What is the Reason Dust Mites Take Residence in my Bed or my Couch? Dust mites greatly enjoy places that contain a large amount of humidity, so any place you drool, sweat, or breathe creates optimal living conditions for dust mites. Dust mites also nestle deep within a carpet or couch fibers, to avoid sun exposure and prevention against being sucked by a vacuum cleaner, or beaten by a vacuum cleaners brush roll.

They Like Humidity But What Do They Like To Eat? You. Dust mites eat the dead skin humans shed daily. A days worth of shedded skin is enough for hundreds of thousands of dust mites. This is also why they enjoy living in the places mentioned earlier, because these are some of the most common places that a person sheds skin.

Why Call Them Dust Mites, Why Not Skin Mites? A majority of dust is comprised of dead skin. The dust you see in the attic, on your TV or in the air is comprised mostly of your dead skin. Because it contains so much dead skin dust mites pretty much consume what we call dust, therefore making them ?dust? mites.

Many people know little to nothing about dust mites, but hopefully upon reading this you now know a little more than before about the creeping crawling dust mites.
