3 Easy Tips To Bathroom Water Conservation

Aug 20, 2008
The climate is changing, and droughts are a recurring event in your hometown. With all this talk about water conservation at home, you can either feel one of three things:
1. Peace; you know you are doing your part and feel good about the cutbacks you've done to help conserve water.
2. Unrest; you know you have changed some of your habits, but you think you can do more.
Or:
3. Guilt; you have done absolutely nothing to help save water.

If you are number 2, don't feel bad. At least you are trying to do your part. If you are number 3, then it's time to jump in the bandwagon and start contributing to the water crisis! Here are some very simple and easy-to-do tips you can start implementing in your bathroom time right away.

Perhaps one of the biggest, if not THE biggest one, ways to save water is to limit your shower time. I cannot stress this enough. If you like taking half an hour showers, you are using 75 gallons of water, which is approximately 27,375 gallons per year, if you are using one of the newer low flow showerheads. If you are using an older showerhead that spits out 4 gallons/minute, you could even be using 120 gallons for every half an hour shower you take. That comes out to 43,800 gallons per year, assuming you shower everyday. If you're accustomed to taking long showers, start cutting back on your time by 5-minute increments. Soon enough, you will be able to take 5 or 10-minute showers as if you've been doing it all of your life.

Don't abuse the water that comes out of your sink faucet. When brushing your teeth, do you let the water run from your sink? Only run the water whenever you need to. When you shave, do you always run the water when you need to rinse your razor? Consider filling up the basin with water instead and use that to rinse your razor instead. Simple dip and swish it around for a little bit to loosen up the hair debris between the razor blades.

Use your toilet only for what it is made for, which, obviously, is for urinating and defecating. Often times, the toilet is used as a trash substitute. All kinds of items are unnecessarily flushed. These items can include feminine napkin wrappers, insects, tissue, paper, cigarette butts, and dirt.

You may also want to consider installing a low-flow toilet, if you are not already using one. Low flow toilets use less water per flush and will reduce not only the amount of water you use but your water bill as well. You can also place a small sandwich plastic bag with small stones in your water tank to reduce the amount of water used.
