Do you expect to grow flowers in the desert? If you are not having any luck growing your blooms in the merciless Las Vegas sun, odds are you are planting the wrong type of flowers. There are some native desert plants that have beautiful flowers that thrive in the Las Vegas valley. With a little planning and research, you can have a great flower bed year after year.

The benefits of incorporating native plants into your landscaping are numerous. Most native plants require very little water and can tolerate that hot summer sun. Desert plants are easy to incorporate into a xeriscape landscaping plan. You'll have a beautiful yard as well as conserving natural resources, not to mention the savings on your water bill.

Did you know that Nevada has 14 native species of Orchid (Hawaii only has three!)? Four species can be found in Clark County in the wild, three of which can be found in the Las Vegas valley. They require just a little water and shade. These native plants are a great choice if you want to brighten up your yard. The University of Nevada - Las Vegas has a comprehensive list of native orchids as well as other beautiful desert plants.

Annuals and biennials are an essential part of creating a beautiful, ever changing yard. There are several species that thrive in the desert climate and can add beauty and color to your yard. The Desert Marigold is a short lived perennial that adds gorgeous yellow and gold blooms. The leaves of the flower have adapted to the harsh desert sun, allowing it to thrive in desert.

The Pale Evening Primrose, also known as Sundrops is a night blooming flower. Its petals are a pale white with a yellow center. The flowers give off a lovely fragrance at night and blooms in the early summer until autumn. The flower blooms at dusk and can tolerate full sunlight. It also requires very little water. There are several subspecies like the Dune Evening Primrose and related species like the Giant Evening Primrose that can thrive in the desert.

Another good choice is the Yellow Alyssum. It will grow in dry, rocky soil makes great ground cover. It will re-seed itself and will need to be cut back each year to encourage new growth. You need to be careful where you plant it, because it can squeeze out other plants.

If you are looking for a more traditional flowerbed, you might want to consider roses. Most varieties will thrive in the Las Vegas valley, despite the hot desert sun. Roses will need consistent watering and at least some shade during the day.

There are lots of native shrubs, decorative grasses and herbs that can turn your yard into a desert paradise, while maintaining a low water use or xeriscape yard. The Southern Nevada Water District maintains a list of approved plants. Las Vegas has several nurseries that carry a wide variety of desert friendly plants for your yard. The plants listed here are only a fraction of the ones available. Check out your local library, there are several excellent books on desert landscaping.
