Methods To Recover Ruined Documents

Aug 20, 2008
One of the most displeasing aspects of flood damage is the devastation it wreaks on our significant papers. Most people keep files of important documents such as house closing documents, guarantees, birth and death documentation, trusts, social security cards, and even passports. When water damage transpires and saturates these papers it can be shocking and overwhelming. The favorable information is that in numerous cases these documents can be rescued.

If your significant documents become water damaged it is imperative that you move fast to take care of the document drying. Get the documents and put wax material between the pieces. If there are a lot of pieces of wet paper that are adhered together don't try to take them apart. Put pieces of wax material between the pieces of the collection. Next, put the piles of documents into plastic bags, close them, and put them into the freezer. Now you have a moment to determine which method to use to renew those useful documents while averting any more water damage.

Airing out the documents is the easiest on the pocket way to dry out the wet documents. Pick a room with lots of surface and/or floor room. Run some fans in the area to keep the air circulating but be sure that they won't scatter the documents around. Move the documents out from the freezer a few at a time and lay them out about the room. Let them dry really well.

Dehumidification is an option to dry out your valuable documents in your home. This way involves having humongous dehumidifiers delivered to your domicile and set up in a room in which it is workable to check temperature and humidity. The documents can be dried on some shelving while the dehumidifiers strip water out of the air and the papers as well.
Freeze drying is a second method for document drying. This procedure necessitates storing significant documents in a commercial freezer for many months. After a time, the moisture in the documents is extracted and the documents dry out. There are businesses that come and retrieve the documents and bring them to their facilities and keep the documents in freezers for this intention. The stumbling block with this process is that the documents would not be available for a longer time.

Vacuum freeze-drying is a different means used to dry water damaged documents. Take your frozen documents to a place outfitted with a vacuum chamber. The papers must stay on ice as they are in in transition to the facility. The documents are put into the vacuum compartment and dried before defrosting. The water loaded in the documents is transformed from a frozen condition into a gas state. The vapor then dispels, rendering the valuable documents dry once more."
