Cufflinks Are Perfect Anniversary Gifts

Aug 21, 2008
The wedding is over. The top layer of the cake has been boxed up and frozen, the catered food has all been thrown away, the vows have been spoken and the dance floor is silent with only a few scuff marks to show that it had ever been danced upon; now, the real adventure of married life begins. After all, the wedding is just a test of sorts to see how committed you can stay to one event that will last only a few hours, feed 150 of your closest and not-so-close friends and family and still manage to cost about as much as a large down payment on a house. Even if you are a billionaire and could afford to recreate your wedding each year on your anniversary date, nothing will ever live up to the moment when you walked down the aisle past friends and family for the first time as husband and wife holding hands, beaming for the cameras and yet not having even one hint what life had in store for you both but surging ahead with smiles on your face anyway.

There are all kinds of lists about what to buy your significant other each year on specific anniversaries. For example, the traditional gift for the 1st wedding anniversary is paper (and before you even think it, a roll of toilet paper would not be as funny a gift as you are imagining in your head, so don't even think of going there, men). The modern gift for first anniversaries, on the other hand, is a clock of some sort. Of course, all gift ideas are open for personal interpretation, like when I strongly suggested to my husband on our first anniversary that plane tickets to Spain could easily count as a paper gift. Sure, he didn't take the bait, but it doesn't hurt to try...repeatedly, if necessary.

If, like me, you have a husband who dresses up quite a bit for work or who requires the wearing of a suit or jacket quite often, then one easy and elegant gift to buy for an anniversary is a set of cufflinks. Here are some examples of cufflink sets to buy for each of your first five anniversaries. You can thank me later for this cheat sheet gift list by sending me those tickets to Spain I am still yearning for...six years later.

First Wedding Anniversary - If you are going the modern route with clocks as the symbol, you could choose any number of sets. If you both love London, for example, some Big Ben clock cufflinks would be appropriate, or perhaps even a set of cufflinks that sport a sundial. If you are choosing to stay traditional, then stick with the paper theme by choosing cufflinks that sport a stylus, scroll or book.

Second Wedding Anniversary - For the second anniversary, the modern gift is china. You can get very creative with this theme by choosing fortune cookie cufflinks, dragon cufflinks or even abacus cufflinks. The traditional gift is cotton so you could be silly and get some sheep animal cufflinks or even some cufflinks made of cotton fabric (which are going to be really hard to find).

Third Wedding Anniversary - The traditional gift for third anniversaries is anything related to leather, so if your man is a cattle baron, why not get some longhorn steer cufflinks. Or if he is more into riding his chopper on the weekends, some Harley Davidson cufflinks could also fit the bill. The modern gift is crystal, so an easy fit of some colored crystal cufflinks would work perfectly, especially if paired with a matching dress shirt.

Fourth Wedding Anniversary - The traditional gift for fourth wedding anniversaries is anything related to fruits or flowers. While he may enjoy you enrolling him in the "Fruit of the Month" club or for those of us watching our budget, a package of Fruit of the Looms, pick his favorite fruit and there is sure to be a set of cufflinks that match. Normally, I would not advise choosing traditional or modern since that choice should be left entirely up to you, but in this case, since the modern gift is an appliance of some sort, you may not want to invest in dishwasher cufflinks for your hubby. Unless, of course, he is a master chef and you find some awesome KitchenAid mixer cufflinks for him, in which case I say, go for it.

Fifth Wedding Anniversary - For modern gifts, the theme is silverware. Now, you could go the literal route and get him some fork cufflinks (especially if he loves to eat), or just go the easier route and get him any type of sterling silver cufflinks that match his personality. For traditional gifts, the theme is wood, so here you can be a bit more creative. Now, I will admit I had never seen a pair of wood cufflinks until I Googled them and lo and behold! They exist and they are surprisingly spectacular looking. You could easily invest in a pair of these or perhaps cufflinks that sport his favorite tree.

You can easily find the wedding anniversary gift themes online and there is sure to be a gorgeous set of cufflinks to match the occasion. Granted, sometimes you will need to be creative and might have to stretch just a bit on the translation of the theme, but the thought will still be behind it. For instance, the modern 44th wedding anniversary is groceries, so other than shoving a pair of cufflinks in between the celery and ground meat on a grocery trip you might have to be a little creative there. Good luck and happy anniversary!
