The Basement Is Not The Only Floor Affected By A Flooding Emergency

Aug 22, 2008
Flood damage in a multi story residence is not always easily clear to a superficial assessment. Large buildings impart more concerns that need to be thought about before moving back in is likely. Water damage is commonly most profound in a basement and can wreck a foundation. A multiple level house has more weight resting on top of that foundation and the threat of caving in must be ascertained before you can move back in.

Examination of water damage starts on the lowest story and moves up. A licensed water damage remediation specialist will check for cracks in your groundwork and harm to the cross joists beneath the first level. If water has entered into your walls, sections may have to be taken away to see if the basic construction remains solid. Even if the water level did not go up above the basement it is likely that something made of wood has absorbed it and there's water damage up above.

When the assessment is being completed all electrical energy in the house must be off. Water can flow into conduits and moisten cables and circuits, causing a different type of very harmful water damage. Electrical wires and channels need to be inspected fully throughout the construction and declared secure by the electric company or fire marshal before you can go back in and turn the power on.

If flooding was the outcome of a strong rain, the upper levels must be assessed for leaking and water damage too. All drainage tools such as gutters and water jets should be emptied of stagnant water and pooling on the outside of the structure should be looked at to see if it is leaking into the building. Water pressure caused by the deluge may have fractured your base and that needs to be restored before the building is announced to be not hazardous.

If your flood damage is the result of an internal split in the pipes, the levels beneath must be checked for security. An overflowed bath or crushed pipe can drive water to drip through to the flooring below and hurt the supporting girders and subfloor. This makes for an unsafe condition and a possible entrance way for termites and carpenter ants. Insect plaguing is not protected by flood protection but are a very realistic consequence.

One other outcome of flood damage is the growing of mold and microorganisms in the areas where water was present. In a multiple level home these harmful things can enter the heating and air conditioning ducts and cause sickness in your loved ones and beloved animals. Also, they are a food resource for certain bugs and will breed speedily if not handled at once. Clear and sanitize any location where water was seen and dry your basement thoroughly after the clean-up procedure.

Water damage should not be taken lightly and has to be examined entirely before you move back into your home or multi story construction. Safety and structural integrity are at all times a stress after a flood and you should locate a water damage restoration professional to help you. Don't take any chances with your safety or the welfare and safety of your loved ones.
