Even Farm Equipment Is Affected By Flood Damage And Require A Repair Service Too

Aug 22, 2008
This year has seen startling flooding throughout the central part of our land. Many of these flooded cities are supported by agriculture. Once the flood retreats there is obvious damage to all the flooding waters have come across. The farming communities lost crops, livestock, buildings, and homes to the flood.

The ruination has been vast in the midsection of the country. A lot of farm gear has endured water damage. The farm equipment will need to be rehabilitated so that the farming communities can begin growing crops again. This equipment is a necessity to the livelihood of the farmers and their families. If at all possible the tractors and any other farming gear should be removed from the flood zone before the flooding. If that is not a possibility it is crucial that the equipment is restored quickly after the flooding to steer clear of corroding and rusting of the parts of this gear which would leave the equipment permanently unusable.

Tractors are the most essential piece of farm equipment. Do not turn on a tractor unless it has been looked over, cleaned, and restored after flooding. The harshness of the water damage depends on how much of the tractor has been submerged. Don't haul a flood damaged tractor as pulling may hurt a transmission, as inevitably there will be water and debris in the transmission. If the tires and wheels are the lone parts that were beneath water, take off the wheels. Wash the wheels and axles carefully. Remove the wheel bearings and clean them. Repack the bearings with grease and put them back into position and oil and change all of the wheel construction.

If the water submersed much more than the wheels and got into the transmission or engine, it is valuable to work on any matters caused by this before you turn on the tractor. Run off all the liquids from the tractor like the oil and transmission fluids. Check the fluids to determine if there is any water in them. If not, refill the engine with oil and the transmission with fluid. If there is water in the liquids, withdraw the oil pan. Make sure that the transmission construction and engine crankcase are completely clean. Replace all filters and fill with new fluids. If the tractor had been completely submerged below water, the engine will have been inundated with water and junk and should be overhauled. Have a tractor mechanic see to this if you are not truly knowledgeable regarding tractor engines.

Take care and perform flood damage services to cleanse and overhaul any other farm machinery which has undergone flooding. Remove the cutting edges of mowers and clean and hone them. Remove debris and wash any added pieces of the mower. Oil parts and reattach them. Clear and grease any bearings on the farm gear that aren't' sealed. Be sure that belts do not have slits or cracks. Change them if they do. Gear cases should be flushed with kerosene and refilled with the appropriate oil. Sprockets and gear workings should be cleansed with kerosene and oiled.

Any chains on the farming equipment should be taken off and immersed in kerosene to take off corrosion. Next they should be oiled and replaced. Don't forget to take care of the farm machinery cautiously as it is the meat and potatoes of the farm.
