Addiction Treatment And The Role Of The Family

Aug 22, 2008
It is true that the families are the most important agencies that can help a patient with addiction treatment. At the same time, it is also true that the families are the most ignorant people when it comes to someone's addiction treatment. We must accept the fact that families are not professionals. They do not know what the addiction treatment program is all about. However, at the same time, it is important to realize that the families are the closest and most influential agencies for the patient. If they are trained in the right manner, they can prove to be very constructive forces in the course of addiction treatment rather than the liabilities that they often turn out to be.

Here we discuss what positive contribution a family can make during addiction treatment and in what manner.

The very first contribution of the family is in convincing the patient to go through the addiction treatment program. This in itself is a major step towards recovery. Most patients who are into a substance abuse or addiction problem will not want to go for any treatment mode. They will be in what is known as a state of denial. These persons will need to be motivated to get into treatment. Families are the best agencies to do this by forming an intervention group.

An intervention group is a group of people who come forward and dedicate themselves to motivating the person for the treatment. Mostly, this will be people from the family and friends and some other relevant people who have the power to motivate the patient. However, the main affairs will be handled by the family. They might be guided by an intervention specialist, also known as an interventionist, who will tell them how they can effectively form a convincing program for the patient by preparing speeches and other methods of encouragement. They will be told how they must modify their own behaviors in a bid to prepare the patient to go through the addiction treatment.

This is a long and arduous process in which the family will have to go through rehearsal sessions before they actually get at convincing the patient for the recovery. It could take a long time, and even when the family actually implements the program with the patient in presence, there is no guarantee that he or she will be convinced. This is the reason why the intervention program can go too long and there can be several meetings with the patient.

Even once the intervention program becomes successful in preparing the patient for the addiction treatment, the role of the family is not over. Now they will have to embark on the all-important task of finding a suitable treatment center and a treatment program for the patient. This needs a lot of searching and researching, and in this they can be guided by a substance abuse counselor or an interventionist. These professionals will tell them various options that exist for addiction treatment in the state and what options they can use for the patient.

It is usually the job of the family of the patient to handle the formalities that are needed in securing their admission at the center, because the patients themselves will not be in a condition to handle the procedures. But people of the family may find this tough too, because of their ignorance of the program. In that case, interventionists can chip in to help them with the admission procedures. This can actually be a good idea because the interventionists are usually affiliated with various programs and they are in much better stead to handle the procedure.

During the treatment, families will need to keep aware of how the program is progressing. They will have to see whether the patient is finding things easy or not and implement changes if things are not going the way they should. They will also need to meet with representatives at the treatment center to learn what they can do to expedite the process of recovery.

A very important role of the family is when the patient is back home from the treatment. Here the family will need to learn how to cope with the situation and handle things carefully so that the patient does not have a relapse. They will have to learn how to identify factors that can bring on a relapse in the patient and how to avoid them. They will need to know what they must do in case a relapse really occurs.

Thus, the family plays a very important role in the addiction treatment process of the patient, right from the start of it to the point where the patient can be said to have recovered completely, which is a very tall order in addiction treatment.
