Ed Hardy Shirts: Celebrity Style You Can Actually Afford

Aug 23, 2008
Christian Audigier has translated the tattoo designs of Don Ed Hardy, the famous California artist into a line of clothing for men and women who want to wear a tattoo without going under the needle. Featuring designs of mermaids, peacocks, snakes and butterflies, this line of Ed Hardy shirts brings the fantasy themes of body art to life. Don Ed Hardy is well-known around the world for his incredible technique and outstanding creativity.

After receiving a B.F.A. degree in printmaking in 1967 from the San Francisco Art Institute, Don Ed Hardy began his career as a tattoo artist. In 1970 he moved to Japan and returned in the 80s to learn the art from a traditional tattoo master.

Don Ed Hardy's ability to experiment through 40 years of tattooing experience has earned him the moniker of "the Godfather of the Modern Tattoo." In his use of art histories from the cultures such as; Cholo, American and Japanese he has shown a rare talent and creativity for combing these icons with designs associated with hotrod, surfing and tattoo cultures. The result of his perspective is a uniquely blended expression that has made him famous in the tattoo community.

The clothing manufacturer, Ku USA, Inc. and Don Ed Hardy signed a license agreement in 2002 to manufacture a clothing line featuring his art. Two years later interest in his designs from major clothing companies began to grow.

One fashion designer who had been captured by Don Ed Hardy's artwork was Christian Audigier. The "Freedom", "Death Before Dishonor" and "Love Kills Slowly" tattoo body art themes created by Don Ed Hardy were licensed to Audigier for his exclusive use in a 2004 agreement. The "Ed Hardy" brand has raised street culture and lifestyle couture to a new level as a result.

Born in Avignon, France, fashion designer Christian Audigier now lives in Los Angeles. Audigier is called "The King of Jeans" from his success as a designer for apparel manufacturers such as; "Fiorucci," "Levi's," "Diesel" and "American Outfitters." Before creating the Ed Hardy brand, Audigier was the Head Designer at Von Dutch Originals, famous for the legendary Kustom Kulture imagery of artist Von Dutch which became a top fashion item for many celebrities around the world.

Part of Audigier success is due to his charisma and close affinity to the entertainment world lifestyle which has inspired many of his groundbreaking ideas in promotion including marketing directly to celebrity clients.

There is a full line of clothing items in addition to Ed Hardy shirts, plus accessories for women and men. There are 7 brands produced by Audigier's company Nervous Tattoo which employs more than 45,000 people to make the clothing lines including: "Crystal Rock", "Christian Audigier", SMET", and most recently "C-Bar-A", "Chuck Boyd", and "Paco Chicano.
