Head Lice Alternative Treatments Can Often Work

Aug 23, 2008
Head lice alternative treatments or any other treatment are definitely not endorsed by head lice and many times even by medical professionals. If you have head lice you need to begin the process of eliminating them right away. Since time is generally your biggest problem as you really want to get rid of them right away using a head lice alternative treatment may be the way to go.

No Side Effects

Many people prefer to use head lice alternative treatments as they normally do not have any bad side effects as they are generally made up of natural products they do not even have a bad smell, like with over the counter products. However, if you start showing signs of rashes, hives or have trouble breathing, stop the head lice alternative treatment and ring your doctor.

Urban Legends

There are a lot of urban legends regarding how to get rid of head lice which are not to be confused with genuine head lice alternative treatments. The first involves adding bleach on your head and having it sit there for ten or fifteen minutes. Now, granted, you probably will kill the head lice, but you will also wind up in the hospital. So if you have to choose between a burnt head and head lice please choose the head lice over the chemical burn on your scalp.

This is another urban legend that is NOT a recommended head lice alternative treatment and that is to live in freezing environment for a few days. Although this will kill a lot of the head lice, again, you are placing your health perilously at risk. I have a feeling that this myth began as a practical joke.

Suffocating Agents

The best treatment for head lice that you can discover is the application of a fluid that suffocates the lice. This treatment is suggested mainly for adults. If you are not sure your child can handle a head lice alternative treatment, call your doctor or pediatrician for help. Avoid the use of essential oils with small children.

Get your hair really drenched. Then, place over your entire hair the suffocating agent - shampoo, body lotion, Vaseline, conditioner, hair gel, massage oil, olive oil - it doesn't matter. Let it sit for at least ten minutes. Then rake through out your hair with fine tooth comb, nit comb or flea comb. Wipe down the comb and all the resulting scum on a paper towel, then burn or trash the paper towel. Then, rinse your hair. Repeat in about three or four days.
