What Do You Need In Your Homeschool Program Curriculum?

By Jeff Safin

Whether your child is homeschooled or state schooled, he or she must be taught the same general curriculum. Although in the case of home schooling one can go into more detail in certain subjects if one wishes.

The major difference between homeschooling and private or public schools is that in a home school environment the teaching is going to be carried out one to one by the parents or a paid tutor, where as in a private or public school teaching is carried out in a social environment and in large groups.

All parents have the desire to offer the best education to their children. So it's only natural that the parent would prefer to have more control over the educational environment of their children so as to provide an education that reflects their beliefs and values.

Nuts And Bolts

There are 4 basic types of a home school course program to choose from. Those types include home schooling through the Internet, computer software, videotape instruction and from textbooks.

Each of these variations of a home school course is acceptable and should be selected by keeping one overriding factor in mind. That factor is based on choosing the program that best suits the learning style of your child.

Some children find it very easy to learn from visual things where as when reading they find it much harder. Others can find learning on their personal PC to be more engaging.

As home schooling has gained popularity over the years the laws and guidelines in each state have slowly got stricter. You must make sure when starting up a home school that you abide by all regulations.

Length Of Study

When homeschooling the learning speed of your child will depend upon you and your child's ability to learn. Nevertheless you will be obligated to test your child now and then to make sure he or she is progressing like he or she should.

It is not uncommon for homeschool material providers to set deadlines to help reinforce this. For instance often when you obtain homeschool materials via the Internet you will be given a license for 365 days in which you must complete the particular course materials.

Testing obligations

It is very common for testing of your child's progress when being homeschooled to be obligated by your local authorities so that they can access how well your child is learning and make sure that he or she is not falling behind.

Some of this testing is required to be done on a yearly basis while some states require that testing be done every other year. Often, the test is administered by the parent teacher and can be submitted in accordance with the rules and regulations surrounding home schooling.

Testing your child to see whether or not he or she is making the progress you desire in very important anywhere, so even if a test is not required where you are, it is still a very good idea.
