Want to Know About Botox Treatment?

Aug 23, 2008
For the last few years if you have wanted to eliminate the signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin and other lines then it is more than likely you would consider using botox; for such a recognized treatment it is surprising how many people haven't a clue how it works.

To help with this, we need to step back a few decades to when this substance was first researched and used. It was first studied back in the early 1960's and derived from the now famous poison Botulinum toxin; researchers were looking into methods to treat neurological problems in people.

In 1989 it was finally approved by the FDA to treat eye muscle disorders; these included blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking), strabismus (crossed eyes) and even wrinkles.

In the year 2000 it was approved to treat cervical dystonia; it was found to be effective at helping patients with neck and shoulder contractions but other eye disorders were included at the same time. In their research, doctors discovered that Botox softened the frown lines between the eyebrows; after this in 2002 the FDA approved it's use on the condition that it was a cosmetic procedure.

Botox has a paralyzing affect when it is injected into areas of the forehead which control the muscles that cause frowning; after a number of treatments the lines start to lessen. With continued use, the frown lines in most instances will completely vanish but the same effect can be found in lines at the sides of the eyes, mouth and other forehead lines. The injections actually contain a purified form of the Botulinum toxin; this same botulism can make us very ill but when use in cosmetic surgery it is a purified form the Botulinum toxin.

Unfortunately, lines and creases form whenever we laugh (especially as we get older) or make any other facial gesture; they are caused by muscles contracting. After years of making these expressions the wear and tear on your face begins to be noticeable and the lines start to become permanent; many 'skin age reduction cream' manufacturers have tried to produce creams that reduce facial line but this is the only treatment that works, currently.

After being injected into the effected area, botox temporarily paralyzes these muscles so that you can't make these expressions; these treatments provide the user with a facial surface that is smooth and often referred to as looking like a dummy or mannequin.

Because frown line, wrinkles and facial creases have all but disappeared, it provides the user with a look of someone much younger. Whilst popular this cosmetic treatment is still very expensive for what it is; with injections in the low to very high hundreds of dollars each, it looks to remain expensive for some time to come. It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn't seem to concern those people who are using it at this moment.
