Texas Holdem How To Play The Game

Aug 25, 2008
If you've watched television at any point during the last four or five years you have undoubtedly seen Texas Holdem being played. The popularity of the game has soared recently due to the mass T.V. exposure it has received. It is a fantastic game that can be played by all. It isn't hard to learn and you can be a decent player with a little practice. Overall it is much easier to get the rules down than some of the other poker games. After you try it a few times you will most likely be hooked. Just be prepared to have a good time and hopefully win some money. Let's look at the basic premise of Texas Holdem and how to play.

The basic poker rules still apply. All of the same winning hands are winning hands. Two pairs still beats one pair, etc. Therefore if you know the winning hands in poker, you're one step ahead of the curve.

You start out by being dealt two cards that only you can see. The two players to the left of the dealer have an automatic bet, also called the blinds. This keeps the game moving and keeps money changing hands. After you see your two cards, you decide if you want to stay in the game. If you want to stay in, you have to match the highest bet. In some cases, you only have to match the person with the big blind. Other times, people will raise after only seeing two cards.

After the betting is complete the dealer will then deal three cards face up onto the table. This is also referred to as the flop. These are community cards and represent the last three cards in your hand. They can be used by anyone, therefore when calculating your odds of winning, take this into consideration. If there are three aces on the flop, everyone has three aces in their hand. After the flop, another round of betting occurs.

Just because someone is betting high, doesn't necessarily mean that they have the best cards. They might just be bluffing. After a few hands, you will begin to learn the tendencies of your opponents. This information can sometimes be more valuable than the cards themselves. As the great Kenny Rogers song once said every hand's a winner, and every hand's a loser. Therefore being able to read body language and cues is an invaluable skill at the table.

After this round of betting is complete, another card is turned over. This card is referred to as the turn. You now have six cards to choose from for your best five card hand. This increases the likelihood of you having a winning hand. However, it also increases everyone else's chances as well. After the turn, another round of betting takes place.

After the betting, the final card is turned over, also referred to as the river. You now have seven cards to choose from for your best five cards. Another round of betting takes place and then you show your cards. The best five cards win.

Overall, Texas Holdem is a great game that is loved by many. If you want to become a good player, the only way to do so is by playing. Get out there and hit the tables.
