It is valuable to comprehend that there is a better chance of salvaging photographs if we work on them when they are still wet. Often photos are kept loosely in envelopes or boxes so they are almost glued together when they get wet. Photos have a finish on them which makes them to stick together. Do not attempt to pull apart photographs when this has occurred as you will hurt the likenesses on the sheets especially if they are multicolored pictures. If your photos are quite aged you need to keep them wet by placing them in an sink of refrigerated water and bring them to a professional who specializes in photo preservation as soon as possible. The material that the antique photographs are mounted on may be easily breakable and may be too brittle to touch on your own.

You must determine how to handle what remains of your water damaged photos by figuring out those that can't be replaced and how dear they are to you. It is the right thought to bring the most important photos directly to a complete service photo laboratory where they have the tools to transform your important photographs as best as can be finished. The rest of the picture can be dealt with on your own.

It is important that you handle your water damaged pictures during the first 72 hours after the damage happens. If you have a little amount of photographs that are wet and are not adhered to each other you can place them to air dry using fans to maintain air circulating. This will assist in drying the pictures faster and will admonish mold from growing.

If there are lots of photographs that have undergone water damage it is essential that you keep them wet while you are trying to deal with the situation. Put the pictures in buckets of cool water# and let them soak. Change the water at least each day to keep it clear. Sopping clumps of adhered photographs will help them detach from one another. This occurs because the suspension on the photograph swells with water and will be able to then free the picture that is adhered to it.

Often times there are numerous photos that it isn't feasible to take care of them all at one time. If this is the scenario you should split any single pictures with a layer of wax sheet between them or if you have several clumps of adhered photographs then detach each cluster with a portion of wax paper. After this is done, get the stacks of photos and put them in plastic bags, tie the bags, and place them in the freezer immediately. This precludes any further water damage and lets you to start on bringing back the photographs as you are able to.
