Signs of Caffeine Withdrawal

Aug 26, 2008
It's the middle of the day and your body seems to be screaming for something but you just can't figure out what it is. You grab a water but that doesn't work and neither does anything else. Now, you begin to sweat and a headache is slowly coming on, but it isn't until your hand begins to shake and that's when you know you are going through caffeine withdrawals. Do you know the signs of a caffeine withdrawal? Chance are if you didn't recognize it in the first sentence you need to learn.

Some have no clue when the side effects of a caffeine withdrawal are serious. However if you are experiencing mood swings, the shakes or insomnia you should probably be seen by a doctor just to make sure. Yes, you can be experiencing insomnia from drinking too much caffeine. Since it serves as a stimulant and an extra dose of energy you are probably too wired to sleep. Instead of going to bed you get involved with something else and end up drinking something else. A few other symptoms of having withdrawal are craving some, constant headaches or drowsiness.

If you notice yourself having frequent urination, diarrhea, headaches or a feeling of uneasiness you should see a doctor. A few other things that may happen when you drink or eat too much caffeine is you'll crave it more and become irritable when you try cutting yourself off.

A person that becomes addicted to caffeine will find that they are constantly drinking more coffee/tea/soda in order to refuel their energy. Caffeine will stay in a person's body for up to 6 hours, but after that they'll need to replace it with more. A person that has continually done this for several times a day, month or years will find their body going through shock if they stop refueling their body with the substance.

Mood swings are a big sign as a person can become extremely agitated or have other mood swings with they are going through withdrawal. The moment they've got some in them within 30 minutes they are back to their normal selves.

Caffeine withdrawals are normally not as severe as someone that is hooked on drugs or a cigarette smoker, they do become annoying. When someone can't function or do their daily errands, concentrate while driving and/or pass out in a line at the store it becomes something that should be looked into. If you see these signs go to a doctor and find out if there is an easier way to deal with it. A doctor may actually tell you that you should limit and/or quit having so much caffeine. Many heart patients are told to cut down on the amount of coffee they have.

If you are afraid of getting a caffeine withdrawal you can always ask the doctor how you should go about doing it. Many times a person must do this slowly for several weeks until it finally isn't an issue. Keep in mind you picked the addiction over the course of several months or years and quitting cold turkey is not something recommended unless you are actually told by the doctor. This may be the case for a diabetic or a person with high blood pressure. Slowly weaning yourself off will mean you'll have a smaller chance of having any withdrawal symptoms which will make quitting that much easier.
