When To Do Beagle Paper Training

Aug 26, 2008
Regardless of the age of your beagle you always want your dog to either be housebroken or on it's way to adopting the behavior. It can be very frustrating when you keep trying everything the vet or the breeder told you to do and still your beagle keeps going in the house. Remain patient and do not strike the animal ever. Some people recommend a swat on the backside as a reminder to your dog to not do something but striking your dog is the worst thing you can do. Also avoid locking your dog in a pen if it has a problem knowing where and when to go.

Your first order of business is to make sure there are no physical ailments causing problems. The vet will let you know if your dog has any physical problems that could be preventing housebreaking. If there are no physical problems then you may have to resort to beagle paper training as a very last resort and it should only be used as a very last resort in almost any case.

You should try to avoid beagle paper training at all costs. One way to avoid the papers is to set aside a 48-hour period where you can take your dog to the spot outside you want them to use every hour on the hour.

If they do what they are supposed to do outside then you use positive reinforcement. After two days they should get the idea.

Another method you can try is to simply watch your beagle for a couple of days non-stop. If they start to give signs that they are going to relieve themselves inside then tell them no in a strong one-word command and then take them outside immediately. When they are done outside use positive reinforcement. A couple of days of this should work as well.

If you have determined that beagle paper training is the only way to go then lay some papers in several layers in their favorite spot in the house. Use positive reinforcement when they go on the papers. Gradually move the area of the papers to the door and then start setting up some of the soiled papers outside making the available area inside smaller.

Keep gradually moving the paper area outside until there is not enough inside for the dog to go on. The dog should then ask you to go outside. Once the dog has learned to go on the papers outside you still have the problem of teaching the dog to hold it until you get home and then going on a certain spot in the yard.

This should always be a last resort, as it does not really train the dog to wait to go outside. It only trains the dog to go on papers outside. Don't forget that you still have more training to do after they start going on the outside papers. When you clean up the papers always leave some soiled papers in the new pile so they know to use them.
