Weight Loss Plateau? Rejoice in Your Non-Scale Accomplishments!

Aug 26, 2008
Have you hit that inevitable weight loss plateau yet? Who among us hasn't experienced the frustration of the bathroom scale? Steady weight loss is an important factor in sustaining motivation. If we're weighing outside of our homes, many of us even anguish over the lightest thing to wear or what to eat prior to the weigh-in. The anticipation of good news makes you wish the week away at warp speed. You know you deserve to see a loss, but the blasted scale has other ideas! It's the dreaded plateau!

It's difficult to let reason reign when you face the plateau. Sure, you know that the scale is imperfect, and you understand all about fluid retention, but somehow that does little to comfort you. The worst part about understanding that it's out of your control is realizing that it could happen again!

So many wonderful things happen during your weight loss journey that have nothing to do with that bathroom scale; so the next time you're hit with the weight loss plateau, celebrate those non-scale victories! You won't have to look far to find them.

Compare a picture of yourself at your starting weight to the face looking back at you in the mirror today. Notice that your eyes are more clear and opened wider. Notice that your cheeks are more sculpted and your jaw line is more taut. Stand back a little further from the mirror and notice the differences in your body. Focus for just a minute on how far you've come, not how far you have to go. Chances are if you've been dieting awhile, you're looking at some significant changes in your appearance that you might not notice every day because they're so gradual. Rejoice in the differences!

Another non-scale victory can be found in your closet. Get through your weight loss plateau by taking inventory of the clothes that no longer fit. Try on that special pair of jeans or that little black dress that you've wanted to wear for a long time. Notice how much better they fit now. Move all the baggy, unattractive clothes to the back and find another outfit that you can work on getting into now.

Use a tape measure to note your current measurements. Compare those to the ones you recorded when you began your program. Check not only the obvious ones such as chest, waist, and hips, but also upper arms, upper thighs, and neck. Write these down so that you can compare again in a month.

Get renewed lab work and compare your medical numbers for cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and triglycerides. Consult with your doctor to see if he's ready to reduce or eliminate any of your medications.

Take a long walk. Think back to when you took your first walk on your diet. Take notice of how much easier it is today. Think of the improvements in your strength and stamina. Think about other physical improvements as well. Are your groceries easier to carry? Are those Pilates moves easier to execute? Can you do more crunches now?

Other than your frustration with the scale, have you noticed any improvements in your mental outlook since you started your diet? Are you mentally lighter as well as physically lighter? Do you seem more positive? These are all victories in the weight loss game that have nothing to do with the fickle scale! Don't let your anticipation about the end goal ruin the ride. Take time often to remember all of your accomplishments. No weight loss plateau can diminish them!
