Maintaining Muscle With Limited Gear Access

Aug 26, 2008
In a perfect world, bodybuilders would have access to the steroids of their choice, at any time or location. There would be a magical medicine cabinet where the morning syringe would be filled to capacity with the perfect stack, and you'd inject every morning without any worries whatsoever.

In real life, there are many obstacles which can arise to that perfect stack. Job demands might require one to leave the state. Your favorite supplier might not be in business anymore. Drug testing might put a roadblock in front of your injections. Legal woes might stop you from injecting completely. Medical issues might arise making injecting impossible. Whatever the cause, these instances do arise.

When your perfectly planned gear regimen is suddenly derailed, you have to make some adjustments and concessions in order to maintain as much of your gains as possible. First off, you should accept that fact that you are going to lose some muscle mass. It's inevitable. You can try to lift and eat better to accommodate the lack of gear, but the reality of the situation is that you're already probably eating and lifting at near your potential. You're going to lose some muscle size. Once 'll be prepared for the next steps to recovering and maintaining as much as possible.

Next, you'll need to reduce your overall training volume. Your muscles will no longer be able to accommodate high volume training. You'll still be able to use heavy weights "up to 90 or 95% of your geared-up weights" but the volume will definitely have to decrease. Your protein level will have to be adjusted as well. When you're using AAS, your body is able to assimilate much more macronutrients, particularly protein, than when you are training naturally. Reduce your protein and carbs, but keep fats somewhat high, as they are essential for testosterone production in your body. Removing yourself from AAS suddenly will result in a testosterone level drop off, and it's something that will need to be addressed. Finally, increase your rest. Your central nervous system (CNS) was able to sustain a great deal of stimulation when you were on steroids. You'll lose that recovery ability without AAS assistance. Sleep and rest more, and cut back on the cardio to ensure you can recover without your former chemical means. Be patient, be prepared for some muscle mass loss, and you'll recover just fine!
