Explaining Ceramic Water Filters

Aug 27, 2008
Bacteria, debris and dirt are filtered out of water, by making use of ceramic water filters. These utilize ceramic material, which has small pores that can filter out these contaminants. Ceramic water filters not only prove to be very effective, but also comprise a very low-cost alternative. In general, anything with a size greater than that of a molecule of water is blocked out by the filter, on one side of which water is introduced, as is the case in many other methods of filtration.

The health of the users may suffer negative impact on account of the silver-impregnated media's by-products. The growth of algae and mold on the filter's body is sought to be prevented and bacteria are sought to be put out of action, by making use of colloidal silver in ceramic water filters. On one side of the filter, besides clean water, contaminants that are composed of smaller particles also get accumulated and the colloidal silver is meant to treat these.

A tap is generally attached to a receptacle in order for water to be dispensed from it and the receptacle, made of plastic or ceramic material, is placed below the ceramic water filter, which is porous. Ceramic water filters built in the form of clay pots are utilized by several non-governmental organizations that have taken on initiatives for the development of drinking water in developing countries.

Soap and hot water are often used for cleaning ceramic water filters. Accumulation of contaminants that are too large to pass through the pores of the filter necessitates the cleaning. The contaminants that are accumulated in the upper part of the filter can be rinsed out with water, for the purpose of cleaning, in addition to a soft brush being used to clean the upper half of the ceramic water filter.

Filters of the portable kind that are based on manual pumping are among the different kinds of ceramic water filters, along with the in-line filters that clean water meant for drinking and sourced from the household's plumbing. Clean water is often made to flow in the reverse direction, as against the direction in which it usually flows, in order to flush contaminants from the pores and to clean the filter of accumulated material.

For the majority of ceramic water filter systems, the risks that need to be watched out for include cracks of the hairline kind and cross-contamination. In the case of accidental dropping of the water filter and, specifically, due to the brittleness of the materials used to produce ceramic water filters, cracks that are difficult to detect may develop and these may let contaminants to pass through. If the side that is meant to be clean comes into contact with unclean cloths, hands or water, the effectiveness of the filter can suffer serious negative impact. Before safe use of the ceramic water filter can be made again, in such instances, the clean side has to be sterilized properly.

In countries where large quantities of water is made use of, ceramic water filter use may not be easy because of relatively smaller quantities of water being filtered within specific periods of time, even as that may not be much of a problem in developing countries where conservation of water is stressed upon. Within an hour, only about one to two liters of water that is fit for drinking may be provided by a ceramic water filter. So, the fact that ceramic water filters provide a relatively lower yield of filtered water as compared to other systems for filtration of water is among the areas of concern related to such filters.

By making use of materials such as active carbon that can absorb contaminants such as chlorine that are chemicals of the harmful kind, ceramic water filters can be used to remove these from water. At regular time intervals, however, the filters have to be replaced, because the carbon tends to get clogged on account of the contaminants getting accumulated. Ceramic water filters are also available in the form of some advanced models that make use of metal strainers. Relatively larger quantities of water can often be filtered in relatively shorter time periods, by the advanced versions of the filters.
