Woodwind Instruments Need The Most Work During A Water Restoration Project

Aug 27, 2008
What can you do when your guitar is found sitting in a puddle of water in your flooded house? Is it feasible to refurbish the considerable harm to the instrument that has provided untold pleasure over the years? Some individuals would think their guitar is ruined and should be tossed out. This is often times not the case. If you get the soggy instrument to a water damage restoration expert quickly enough, it can likely be restored. This can be an expensive process so it is important to decide how precious the guitar is before you decide to mend it rather than get a new one. See a certified and insured professional guitar restoration specialist. Verify their references to be certain that the water damage restoration specialist is reputable.

A water damaged guitar might have a warped neck, marred outside layer, neck coating peeling, oxidation of the string section, screws and bridgeplate handles and glue coming disengaged. There are many measures that are required to be taken to restore a water damaged guitar. Initially, take off the strings, pegs, and the bridge. Take off any different hardware. Then the devastated varnish must be separated. This can be done using wet to dry rubbing using a sander of a fairly coarse grit to get the veneer off. The neck and body need to be washed with rubbing alcohol to better evaporate any remaining wetness. When the lacquer is entirely separated, it should be hung up to breathe and dry. This can demand several weeks.

When the guitar is drying, the components, pegs, and screws should have the oxidization taken off with a soft brass applicator and light oil. Rub the parts dry and burnish with a lint free cloth. Set these parts off to the side until every part of the refurbishment has been done.

If the neck and keyboard of the guitar was bent and rotated, the neck will have to be set straight if the guitar is to be saved. This is done by taking off the frets and securing the neck very firmly to produce a level clavier. Then the neck has to be evenly heated until the paste under the clavier becomes flexible. With the neck fastened in its new orientation, the paste below the fingerboard is set. After having been clamped for a few days, the neck and front of the guitar must be shaved and reformed as well as smoothed to get rid of peeling veneer. When the keyboard is set correctly right, it should be sanded and oiled.

The neck and head must be sanded and covered with linseed oil and mineral spirits many times. After this is over, to finish the neck and head, new frets should be put in. Then the interminable activity of sanding and finishing the body commences. This might require many coats to accomplish a good veneer. When the veneer is finished the components, bridgework, and pegs need to be replaced. The guitar can then be strung. When there is pressing on the neck of the guitar from the strings, the keyboard and frets need to be adjusted as well as additional pieces of the hardware to fine tune the mechanics of the strings section. When this is accomplished, the water damaged guitar restoration has been done.
