Finding The Right Golf Club Irons

Aug 27, 2008
Golf irons are used for shorter golf shots that range from 200 yards to less than 100 yards. They are one of the subsets that make up a "set" of golf clubs (Woods, Irons, Wedges, Putter). These irons are also perfect for those shorter shots from the fairway when a golf wood may be too much. The Irons are used for shorter shots than woods, usually shots from the fairway or rough, approaching the greens. These clubs are the essential part of a set of golf clubs. The irons are said to be either a traditional design wherein the iron is forged and has a generally continuous back portion or a second type of design known as cavity backed. These clubs are also a very important release as we all want to hit the ball better, cleaner and closer to the hole. Golf irons are primarily made of metals but some manufacturers sometimes choose to combine these soft metals with steel shafts, rather than graphite, which they say gives a better result.

There are many things to look for when buying golf club irons and it is always a good idea to buy your first set of clubs from a store that has a knowledgeable sales representative available. You may want to consider buying your set of golf club irons from a PGA certified golf pro at a pro shop at your local golf course. PGA stands for the Professional Golfer's Association and a certified PGA Golf Pro will know exactly how to fit you with your first set of golf club irons and then give you the tips you need to know to buy your own golf club irons in the future.

Irons are the most versatile clubs in the bag, allowing advanced players to hit a variety of different shots with the same club. Irons usually range from numbers 1 to 9, with lower numbered irons having lower lofts. Irons from most companies now claim to have a much lower center of gravity than their older counterparts. They usually come in a set consisting of 8 clubs: 3 iron, 4 iron, 5 iron, 6 iron, 7 iron, 8 iron, 9 iron, and Pitching Wedge. They are used to hit the golf ball off the ground from distances of 125 yards to 225 yards.A set of golf irons are typically identified (numbered) two through nine, a pitching wedge, an alternative wedge, and a sand wedge.

Tell the pro that you are in the market for golf clubs and you need help finding the best irons for your particular skill level. Whatever method is used, a competent professional can then point you to the type of clubs to best suit you. Unless a professional is "pushing" a certain brand of clubs, they should give you at least three or four possibilities. No matter how much you've set aside for new golf clubs, you can get golf irons featuring the latest designs and high-performance materials.

It is a good idea to take some lessons before buying your first real set of golf club irons. A teacher will show you the proper golf stance and then teach you where the golf club irons fit in that stance. If you don't know this up front then you could wind up buying clubs that do not fit into your game and you could find yourself not enjoying the game of golf very much. So take some golf lessons and make sure you pay close attention to the way your instructor tells you to fit the golf club irons into your stance and you will get the maximum results.

Know your game. If you're only randomly hitting balls then even the best irons won't be able to improve your game. But if you already know which shots you do best and which ones you need more help then the right choice of irons can make your good shots great and your worse shots fair. Also, consider the prices. Don't invest too much in your first set because you're liable to make changes as you get to know your game better. And lastly, always take the chance to try golf irons out before buying!
