What You Should Do If Your Come Home To Water Damage

Aug 28, 2008
Imagine making your commute back to your home from work and being stuck in rush hour traffic. You can't wait to get home, kick off your shoes, and spend a relaxing evening stretched out on the sofa watching your favorite television show. Imagine the horror and utter shock if you arrived at your home and the floors were flooded. What do you do? Even worse, what would you do if there was major flooding in your area from a faulty levee?

If only the floors are flooded and the the flooding itself is not caused by a major source, such as a dam, levee, or a natural disaster, then you need to find the source of the leaking right away. Check underneath all sinks and anywhere else where you can see the pipes. If the leak is originating from that source, then you can turn off the shut off valve to stop the leaking. If, however, you cannot find the source of the leak, then you will need to shut it off outside from the main water supply. If you do not have access to this, then a quick phone call to your water company may help.

Major flooding from a hurricane is one of the worst things that can happen to your home. Major repairs and cleaning will need to be done to get your home back to its previous condition. If the flood water managed to reach your roof, then the water damage to your home is probably very severe. In most cases, a home would have to be torn down and built again from the ground up. Everything would be damaged: all of your furniture, your personal belongings, and the walls and floors of your home. There would most likely be mud, dirt, and other debris that the water brought into your home during the flooding.

Call a water damage restoration crew right away. In the meantime, you need to get the most water out of your home as soon as possible. The longer your floors and walls are submerged and in contact with water, the greater the damage can be. Ask your neighbor or any nearby family members or friends to help you out. Get your furniture and all of your belongings outside and on dry ground as soon as possible. Once you have gotten the water to the point where you cannot scoop it out anymore, then use a broom to sweep any of the remaining water outside.

Once the water damage crew has arrived, they will make sure to fix the problem right away. They have special equipment that can suck all of the water and moisture out of carpet and a special device for hardwood floors so that it won't corrode. With the right professional crew working on your home, you should not have to worry about whatever damage the water could have done to your home.
