Home Business Scams: How Can You Tell?

Aug 29, 2008
Finding a legitimate work at home opportunity is appealing to those who are trying to keep their finances afloat these days. Although this sounds like an ideal answer to your situation, you will need to ensure you do not fall for the ever increasing work at home scams that are popping up everywhere.

Number one: you have to provide your bank account numbers or other personal information. If an employer wants you to work from home, they may very well ask you for your social security number for income tax purposes. This is not too unusual. However, they will never ask you for personal information such as bank account numbers, your mother's maiden name, how long you've owned your home, etc. as a condition for employment. You'll know it's a home business scam when they seem more interested in getting information FROM you rather than giving tasks TO you.

One of the oldest scams in the work at home field is the multi-level marketing or pyramid scheme. If you join a company and your sole task is to find other people to join the company, you are involved in a pyramid scheme and this is a huge waste of time and money. The only people that ever get rich are the ones at the top and you will never make it to the top no matter what they promise you.

It is hard to imagine that people would actually fall for those Nigerian email scams, but they do. Some people have lost the entire contents of their bank account falling for these scams. No legitimate person will ask you to deposit money for them. There is no situation where this is necessary. Stay far, far away from anyone who asks you to do this.

The old saying aif it is too good to be true, it isa holds true when dealing with work at home opportunities. If you are contacted with an opportunity that promises you a world of wealth and a lifestyle you can only dream of, it's likely a scam. Truth is if it was that easy, everyone would be rich. A legitimate company will not contact you; you will need to contact them.

Legitimate opportunities are those that you seek, not the ones that seek you. You could have a successful career in medical transcription, web design, or affiliate marketing for example. You will have to search for them, but they are there. No matter what the opportunity is, you need to extensively check them out prior to joining.

Look at who the company is: they should have a website or be listed in the Better Business Bureau. Google their company (or employee) name to see if other people have written about them. That will tell you right away if there's something you need to be aware of. If that company is really a home business scam then they've probably already conned a few people out of money or labor. Those victims will help spread the word, and you can benefit from their foolishness if you check out the company before you start work.

As tempting as the promise of great wealth is, be cautious of the companies you conduct business with. If you are ever asked to practice unethical tasks like searching out personal information or an email address on an individual, you know that you are involved in a scam. If they will do this to others, it will happen to you.
