What Exactly Is SCORE?

Sep 1, 2008
SCORE formerly was known as the Service Corps of Retired Executives but today is known as SCORE "Counselors to America's Small Business". It is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1964 to help counsel and mentor small business owners through the maze of things you should know when starting or growing a small business.

Over the past 40 years SCORE has managed to help nearly 8 million small businesses across the United States and its territories. They operate nearly 400 offices with the help of over 10,000 volunteers. And they have an online mentoring program for those that can't get to an office easily. Whether you need help with management, marketing, human resources, or finance they have counselors with experience in that field plus many others. Their services are free for you to use whenever you need them.

Often in small business people start to think that they don't need any help. They say to themselves "What can someone else know about my business that I don't already know". Well in fact there are a lot of things that you might not know. Often what you do know is centered on how to run your business. Meaning you know how to operate it from day to day. But as it grows or you develop the urge to expand it then you run into many situations that you do not know enough about. Things like employee compensation plans, marketing plans, developing business credit and so on. Often it is the general business questions that you won't have an answer to but someone else might.

Now if you are an inspiring entrepreneur with an idea that you would like some help then an organization like SCORE can help you to. By taking the idea to them they can help with the business plan side of the equation. Most people that have never run a small business before do not truly know what they are getting into. Owning a small business is a very time and resource intensive activity. There are a lot of potentially costly mistakes that you might make if you are not careful. Having a mentor can help to steer you through the rough waters that might be ahead. And that is exactly what an organization like SCORE is for. In business many of the same mistakes are made over and over again by different people.

So if you are in need of help with planning or just some advice on a particular subject SCORE might be the right organization for you to go to. They can help you and the price is always right for a small business. Free. You can't beat that. But their counselors have so many years of experience in business that it's not even possible to add them all up. If you don't have a local office near you then you can still check in to their online program which since its launch has become hugely popular. Sometimes all you need in small business is a little helping hand.
