Sep 1, 2008
Metal detecting is fun. Whether it is for you or your children, the idea of treasure hunting is one that goes back to the wild dreams of pirate movies and stories. Everyone loves finding something of value, and metal detecting can be the answer to those dreams. The other benefit of metal detecting is the opportunity it provides for the kids to get out of the house. For what ever reason you decide to get your metal detector, once deciding to pick one up, here are a few tips on getting a good deal on a used metal detector or a cheap metal detector.

Finding the right price on metal detector can also allow you get more than one. If you and your child or children all get involved in metal detecting, it can get frustrating trying to share one metal detetor. Getting a good deal on several metal detectors can go a long way in keeping the peace on the home front. There are some great places where you can snag a bargain on discount metal detectors, both in person and online.

For example, do you have a used sporting goods store near your home? They may have some great discount metal detectors that are gently used, and many of these models will last for years so there's no reason you shouldn't consider them. You can even try them out right there in the store!

Scour flea markets, garage sales, and check the classifieds of your newspaper to see if anyone is selling used models. A great classified location to find used metal detectors is Craigslist. They are an online classified, and most people post locally. You can find great deals, and often the metal detectors are hardly used.

A really great place to find a metal detector is at your local pawn shop. Many times, these are the kinds of items to get pawned so you can expect to be able to get a good deal.

Of course the internet is probably going to be your biggest source of discount metal detectors, either new or used. In many cases, the discount metal detectors are those models that an online store has on their books, one that hasn't been sold, and they need to get it out of their inventory. This is much like what any other retailer does; they offer deep discounts on older models or older styles of virtually everything so that this year's models can be sold. Basically, you are getting a metal detector onsale.

Of course a lot of these metal detectors will not have all the features that this year's models may have, but they're still very workable and usually have enough good features so that they're perfectly useable and will be enjoyable as well. Remember, there aren't usually really big advances year to year on a device, and all the people that purchased a metal detector last year aren't running out to get the newest, so you will be just fine.

You can always add add-ons too your metal detector as you become more experienced with the device. If you are primarily using the metal detector at a beach you may want to consider a visual reference option so that you can determine the type of metal being detected before you even dig it up. This means that when you don't need to waste your time pulling up every bottle cap or aluminum can pull tab you come across and can concentrate on gold and silver jewelry and coins. And, while you have a great opportunity to find some really good stuff at the beach, you are also going to run across alot of trash.

Some metal detectors have built-in sensitivity meters which you can adjust, depending on the ground surface over which you'll be hunting. If you are treasure hunting on a sandy beach all of the time you may not need this option so why pay for it? If your treasure hunting expands into wooded area then you may want to add this optional feature to your metal detector.

For what ever reason you choose to buy a metal detector, and which ever method you choose to use to get your detector, one thing to do is make a list of the features you are looking for, and then make a list to compare the prices of new metal detectors you like. Then go out and start to compare the pricing of discount metal detectors to the new. That way, you can make an informed decision on your metal detector.

Buying cheap metal detectors can be viewed as an investment in your own enjoyment but in your family's education as well. It's a great way for the entire family to spend a weekend or beautiful day on the beach, and if you happen to actually find something valuable as well, that makes it all the better! Why not start your treasure hunting by getting a great deal on the tools of your trade!
