Who is Emailing Your Child?

Sep 2, 2008
There is no question that the Internet has profoundly changed the way your kids are educated. The World Wide Web has opened up entire new universes of information which is now available to students with a few keystrokes and clicks of the mouse.

Of course, it is also a favorite way for your child to keep in touch with friends and make new friends. With social networking sites like Zubby, MySpace, and Friendster, your child can keep in touch with all of their friends and have some fun while they're doing it.

But even kids who are too busy to build relationships on social networking sites can still communicate with one another via email. Email, in fact, is the most used form of online communication because it transmits information instantly, and allows its users to store their correspondence indefinitely. One of the biggest drawbacks of email, however, is that could allow strangers to strike up relationships with your kids.

Unfortunately, there are predators who will go online and look for children to converse with. So, while your child may think they are talking to a 13-year-old boy from another state, they could actually be talking to a 56-year-old man very close to your home.

This is an extremely scary situation and idea to think about, but it happens all the time. The more you know, the easier it is to ensure the safety of your children. If your child is getting strange emails or is conversing with someone online that you don't know, it might be worth checking out.

Talk to your child about how he or she became acquainted with each online friend. If your child is suffering from low self-esteem, you should be even more vigilant. Most predators are highly skilled at creating a bond of trust in kids with self-image problems, and then horrifically abusing that trust.

Luckily, there are several new websites where you can check to see exactly who is emailing your child. That's right. All you have to enter is the email address of the person you're trying to find information about. You don't need to have their name, Social Security number, or address.

By typing in their email address, you can find their name, address, phone number, and background records. These background records are extremely important because they contain arrest records for federal and state correction facilities. They also contain the facts about misdemeanors and felonies this person may have been convicted of, and whether or not they are a sex offender.

Your role as a parent is both the most difficult and most rewarding one you will ever play. By taking responsibility for your kids' safety on the Internet, you will be going a very long way toward keeping them safe in your own home!
