Liposuction Procedure Reality and Myths

Sep 2, 2008
Liposuction procedure is most often used for cosmetic purposes, to give a smoother shape to areas such as the thighs, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, calves, arms or back. Liposuction procedures performed on the neck are often done in conjunction with other procedures creating a more dramatic and appealing transformation. By itself neck liposuction takes approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Liposuction procedures vary depending on what your ultimate cosmetic goal is, and whether you are combining liposuction with other plastic surgery procedures.

Liposuction procedures into your thigh can deal with excess fat deposits in your upper leg. However let's face reality. Liposuction procedure is known as the cosmetic surgery with the least amount of side effects or risks . However there are few risks involved such as blood clot formations, loss of sensation, and lumpiness in the area. Liposuction procedures have increased as fashion introduced more mid bearing clothing like low rider pants and shorter tops. The number of tummy tucks performed has increased with the current trends as a more desired form of liposuction.

Results achieved from liposuction are often visible within one to three months, while the full effects may not be evident for six months to a year. The more fat removed, the longer it takes to achieve optimal results because the skin has to adapt to a more radical change in shape. Results vary among patients but the majority of patients are happy and enjoy the improved quality of life.

Surgeons in the United States are required to complete an extensive training program in UAL before offering the procedure to patients. Surgeons use this method, which allows to inject large amounts of anesthetics, and therefore this kind of procedure can be done with local anesthetics. The operation usually takes longer than the first one (4-5 hours). Surgeons should avoid patients who have 1) unrealistic medical expectations, 2) a history of significant medical problems. Patients can reduce the risk of complications by 1) resisting the temptation to save time by attempting to do multiple unrelated surgical procedures along with liposuction, and 2) resisting the temptation to maximize the volume of fat removed on a single day.

Areas most effectively treated with liposuction are the abdomen, hips, chest, flanks, thighs, neck, upper arms and knees. One way to tell if a person could benefit from liposuction is to stand in front of a full-length mirror and note the contours of the body's silhouette. Areas amendable to liposuction include: face and neck, arms, back, breasts, abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, calves and ankles. Prior to surgery the patient has a physical examination, along with blood tests and photos, which are performed usually at the office of the doctors.

Skin pigmentation changes can happen in the suctioned areas. Accumulation of blood beneath the skin and numbness can occur but usually dissipate in a short time. Skin is usually very elastic, but this is individual. Once the fat layer is removed, skin sticks better to the muscle and usually shrinks back very well. Skin will retract back to its natural shape, leaving you with the desired results within a few weeks, and with optimum results in a few months.
