Basement Bugs Is A Homeowner Dilemma After The Water Flood Has Done It's Damage

Sep 4, 2008
The amount of damage and issues that is the result of a basement flood if huge if it is not addressed early. From water that serves as a breeding ground for bacteria to damp walls that are ideal for producing mold spores, you can be sure that not doing any type of remediation work to the flooded area will lead to bad things for everyone in your house. The main thing to watch out for is disease from the molds and bacterias. Another problem is that as the water sits around it exerts a slight force against the foundation of the house and over time it will infiltrate and leave openings for bugs and other friends to get inside and setup up home for themselves.

The types of bugs that moist environments attract include carpenter ants, termites, silverfish, beetles, roaches, etc. A weakening of your homes walls and possibly the foundation and roof will result when they migrate from where they gained entrance, the basement. The conduits for your electrical wires will be their highway. Carpenter ants and termites also devour damp rotting wood and silverfish feed on human waste. (Look for them congregating in areas like the bathroom or any place that is dirty.) Every one of these is disgusting bugs are available in abundance in a flooded basement situation whether you take preventative measures or not.

To avoid an insect infestation you must to secure your home and eliminate any chance of a flooded basement or cracked foundation. Have a water restoration specialist do an assessment on your home and point out the specific areas that require work. Seal all cracks with an expandable epoxy that will stretch from the inside wall to the outside wall, swell up, and contract with temperature changes. Install a sump pump if water does not drain correctly and check all in place French drains and gutters to make sure that water flows in the direction it's supposed to: away from your home.

Pools of standing water outside your home can lead to bug infestations also. Mosquitoes breed in still water and carry diseases such as Malaria and West Nile Virus. Level off any areas of your property where standing water accumulates after a rain portions that are nearest to your home at the outset. Damp, heavy soil can buckle your foundation and cause cracks that can lead to a flooded basement and create entry points for insects and smallish animals. If you live in a rural location with a lot of trees or brush back any branches that are in contact with your home and remove any dead or rotting trees and stumps.

Contact a water damage restoration specialist or a pest control professional if you need help in the cleaning or exterminating process. If you really need their help, you will be glad you did!

A flooded basement, if left unattended, will become a food source and breeding ground place for a variety of different species. Nature has an order to it and that order is, "The Food Chain," with bacteria and mold amongst the lowest species on it. These organisms are a food source for insects. Insects are a food source for rodents, spiders, and birds. Rodents are a food source for snakes.

The longer wood is wet the more susceptible it is to rot and rotting wood is both food and shelter for ants and termites. In other words, it is critical to clean out and remedy a flooded basement. If required circumstances may call for sealing it off so that all damage is stopped cold and so it will not be vulnerable should it flood again. If not, you may just wind up with a whole colony of unwanted roommates that are really tough to evict.
