Effective Labrador Training

Sep 4, 2008
Puppies are adorable and sometimes we let them get away with bad behavior because we think they look too cute or don't know any better. When you are starting Labrador training you can't let your dog's cute little puppy dog eyes get in the way of proper obedience training. You must be firm but not harsh, consistent and patient with the new addition to your family. Praise is the best way to help training along as well as lots of tasty treats.

The longer you leave training the longer you are allowing bad behavior to set in and remain a habit. One of the first things you can teach a puppy is how to answer to its name or to calls. This is a very basic command but it's an important one. Without it you will have unruly dogs that will not obey you. Make training fun and keep it short but consistent. Repeat training every day and this is the best way to make progress.

Take your Labrador puppy out to meet new people and other dogs. You don't want an aggressive dog. Exposing your dog to other people and dogs is a part of Labrador training that will allow your dog to be well socialized. Also start to bring your dog in the car or short rides even at this age.

You also want to start working on things like playing fetch. This is a great way to exercise your dog and you and your dog will have plenty of fun. You might sometimes have the problem of your dog picking up the stick and then dropping it half way.

Teaching your dogs to come when you call is an important aspect of Labrador training. One way is to keep whistling while your dog is eating this will make it associate whistling with food. Another way is to keep calling your dog's name and whistling and when it comes over to you praise it, scratch it's belly, and generally make a big deal of your dog. It will slowly begin to associate you calling it with a reward.

Labrador problem behaviors such as jumping up on people and being too rambunctious are easy to solve. Although it is a characteristic of the breed to be energetic and sometimes too friendly you can train your dog to be well behaved around everyone. You need to be consistent and not give in to the dog's enthusiastic wagging tail and smiling face. Your dog is expressing its love even if it is sometimes destructive.

Make sure to walk your dog plenty, ideally twice a day, to work off all its energy and give it enough exercise. People who don't give their Labradors enough exercise and wonder why Labrador training does not work are missing an important point about Labradors.

Labradors need constant stimulation to be happy, being cooped up inside is not enough stimulation no matter how big your house is. A walk early in the morning and then later on in the evening will help your Labrador to be a little mellower during the day.
