Ways To Beat The Retirement Blues

By Lee Dobbins

It can be hard to go from working to retirement. You may miss always having something to do, and feeling like a valued member of team. But you can get those feelings in retirement, too, if you create opportunities.

Retirement is the opportunity to enjoy your life, relax and do the things you wished you had time for, when you were working. Now you can get off the treadmill and take leisurely walks instead.

In the summer when it's hot, you probably think about how nice and cool winter was--and vice versa. When your toes were cold you probably longed for July. The same is true for retirement--focus on your memories of some of the stressful times at work. Retirement is the reward you get for surviving those.

It's surprising, perhaps, to realize that the feelings you have about retirement aren't all good. It's scary to have large blocks of time to yourself when you are used to having a boss and a list of things to do. It will take awhile to adjust, but in a few months, you will find yourself relaxing and enjoying yourself.

It's a big change to move from working to retirement. All of a sudden, you have more control over your time. And while that change is welcome, it can be a little scary, too. In order to enjoy your time, there are several ideas you may want to consider.

1. An amateur is someone who does something for fun--it's from the Latin word for "love." What do you love to do? Sports? Crafts? Cooking? Take a class and try something new--wood turning or oil painting or even playing the fiddle.

2. Retirement is a great time to get serious about your hobbies. If you've always loved singing, painting, or other diversions, now you have time to devote to your passion.

3. There are lots of people and animals who need time and attention--and you can help in so many ways, from reading to children at a local library to walking dogs at the animal shelter, from visiting lonely people at a nursing home to serving food at a homeless shelter. You might discover new talents in yourself by volunteering.

4. Retirement is a great time to get back in contact with old friends. Now that work and children are no longer getting in your way, you can take the time to locate people you haven't talked to in years, and reminisce about the past.

5. Retirement is a great time to pack your bags and see the world. Better yet, you can usually get a senior discount at hotels and restaurants.
