Breast Augmentations Can Provide Enhanced Size and Shape

Sep 5, 2008
Breast augmentation more commonly known as a boob job, can be used to increase the size of small breasts, or in cases of lost breast volume or "droopiness" that occurs after breast-feeding or weight loss. Most implants used by surgeons are made of saline solution, so there is no danger if any leakage occurs. The implants used are generally smooth because textured implants can cause rippling of the skin. To provide an ideal result, this procedure can be combined with a breast lift in some patients with significant "drooping".

Nipple sensation and breast-feeding are usually not effected by augmentation. The most common side effect is the formation of a "capsule" of scar tissue around the implant, which makes the implant feel hard. Your surgeon may minimize this by placing the implant under the muscle, as well as by using meticulous techniques to limit bleeding and the chance of infection. Incisions are hidden in the armpit or under the nipple.

The surgery will generally take one hour and be performed under general anesthesia. Patients will return home the same day, and should return to work within a week. Patients should also make sure to avoid lifting and exercise for two weeks. Postoperative massages can prevent the implant from hardening.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Implants
Q: Do you place breast implants above or below the muscle?
A: In many cases, the impalnts are placed below the muscle, because some believe this gives you a softer result. The muscle action on the implant breaks up scar tissue around the implant that can result in hardness of the breast. In trim patients with limited breast tissue, the muscle also gives additional coverage for the implant, which make the breast feel more natural.

Q: Do incisions around the nipple result in decreased nipple sensation?
A: It is extremely rare to see decreased sensation of the nipple with this incision. The nerve to the nipple enters the breast in a predictable location and care is taken at the time of surgery to protect this nerve.

Q: Are Silicone implants available?
A: Yes. Some surgeons are on an experimental protocol that allows them to use silicone in certain cases.

Q: When do is Silicone a better choice?
A: Patients who are trim with limited breast tissue are at risk for rippling when using saline implants due to the limited amount of tissue they have to cover the implant. In these cases silicone can give a more natural and softer result with decreased rippling.

Q: Do surgeons recommend routine removal and replacements of implants every 10-15 years?
A: While some surgeons may recommend removal, some will only recommend removal if you are having problems with your implants or if they have deflated.
