Could a Traditional Name Help Your New Baby Sleep?

Sep 5, 2008
A lot of importance is placed upon what you name a child and a bad name can haunt him or her for all rest of his or her lives. Need I remind of the Johnny Cash song about A Boy Named Sue that was given to a sleeping baby boy by a father who did not stick around to see the traumatizing affects.

Surely Sue would not have made that same choice if he was permitted to name himself. It has occurred to me more than once that a child should be given the chance to name him or herself. Sleeping babies named John might reinvent themselves later in life as Sid Vicious. It could happen.

My son was named very unceremoniously. My wife was carted out of the recovery room all lathered up. As she held our sleeping baby boy we were harassed by an administrative type asking me what we wanted to name our baby. I had forgotten what we wanted to name him and thought, erroneously that he would have to go through his life unnamed.

Parents can go nuts naming their child something so unusual that it escapes reality, while some parents are very concerned about the googability of their future baby. With Monster and other websites naming conventions could become very important. Think about the name. Make sure that it is a name that commands respect.

Give it thought. Verify that the name will not turn people off or has some other connotations that will follow the infant. An odd name will surely cause many unforeseen problems for a young adult. A well known musician named is children Moon Unit and Dweezil. What fuss do you think that can cause?

A person's name should also be easy. Simply stated, it needs to be easy for others to spell and pronounce. Learning to spell English is hard enough because of the awkward spellings. Use a J for a J sound and not a G. This is your opportunity to make a good decision. Decide well.

You may have a big family. Naming your baby will surely cause some upheaval by offending someone. Great Aunt Whatchamacallit was holding out for someone to name their baby after her before she died. Do not succumb to the pressure. Name the infant what you want.

Honestly, just name the baby girl or boy something that you think works. It must work for you and work for the child too! Can you see yourself calling from the downstairs -- Optimus Prime get down here and take the trash out. Ultimately it should be a name that helps you and your baby sleep all through the night.
