Tips On Choosing A Suit Designer

Sep 6, 2008
Determining which suit designer is best for you is a necessary skill in this day and age. The media tells us what to eat, what to drink, and even what to wear. However, sometimes we need to take a step back and do what is right for us.

My years of experience have given me a vast amount of insight into what each designer focuses on in their designs. In this article I will teach you what the differences are between a few brands and how to spot them. I'll also teach you how to choose a suit that looks good on your particular build.

Designer suits always start out at the shoulders and lapels. Vintage suits will always have wider lapels, while contemporary suits will usually have medium sized lapels. Look for a more aggressive urban look in the more modern designers.

The man with a medium build has more choices than the thinner and larger builds. The only word of caution is to get a suit jacket with a shoulder that has a natural looking padding to it. Suits to consider are Mantoni, Zanetti, and Coppley.

Men with more size to them than average need to choose a suit with larger lapels and thinly padded shoulder spreads. Some designers to consider are Perry Ellis, Haggar, and Bill Blass. These suits are good for making a large man look his best.

Thin men should look into more aggressive looks with thick shoulder pads and narrow lapels. This look can be found in any Jones of New York, Sean John, Michael Kors, or Kenneth Cole suit. These suits make thin men look more muscular and fit.

Pants can be one of three different styles. Look to find models with pleats, double pleats, and flat fronts. These styles should be chosen based off your particular build.

Lean men need to wear flat fronted pants to focus in on the leg rather than the suit. These pants help make the thinner man look thicker and more muscular up top.

The medium sized man can wear any style of pants he deems appropriate. However, this man should take into account the type and style jacket he chooses to accompany the suit pants.

Larger men should wear something in a pleated or double pleated model. This will hide some of the natural shape of the leg and make the portly man look less portly. Also this model will go nicely with the appropriate style lapels.
