Leeches and Other Odd Bait for Fishing

Sep 6, 2008
Fishing is not the hardest thing to undertake, but there are some critical components to it that you have to know. Perhaps the most important is bait. In this article, we take a look at lesser known bass and trout bait.

Bait is the holy grail of fishing. Get it right and you can have an amazing day. Get it wrong and you can watch the proverbial tumbleweed roll across the water as you try not to fall asleep from boredom.

The feeding habits of your basic bass and trout have been established for a very long time. If you are having a bad go of it with these fish, sometimes it pays to think outside of the bait box.

What is the one thing that makes even the most macho men squirm? Yep, leeches. We have all seen them in movies and been grossed out. Well, it is revenge time. Both bass and trout go wacky for leeches. Just be careful handling the little blood suckers.

Is there anything better than the tail of a lobster? I do not think so and neither does your average bass. Okay, bass do not eat lobster, but they love crayfish. Give one a try as bait and be ready for the feeding frenzy. No butter needed.

There is a certain bait that acts like crack for bass. The answer is the might frog. Bass go nuts for them. You want to have the bait resting on the surface of the water close to dawn or dusk. The bass will strike from the bottom like a great white shark.

Mice are a delicacy for big bass. Get an imitation lure and create lots of vibrations. A mouse in water is panicking and flailing around. Make your lure do the same and a big fish might be on your line in the near future.

The next issue is whether imitation or real bait should be used? If you choose leeches, they need to be the real McCoy. Everything else can be of the fake variety, although mouse flies are better than anything else.

While all of these types of bait will work, they can be very hit and miss. Use them on a whim, not as your main bait if you want to be sure to pull in bass or trout from your local fishing hole.
