Understanding Roof Repair Options
A home is all built at the same time which leads one to believe it should all last the same number of years. Actually, this is a false assumption. Your roof, for instance, will rarely last as long as the rest of the home.
Sooner or later, your roof is going to need work. It might be because it is damaged in a storm or it might simply run through the expected life span for the materials used. Whatever the reason, you are going to need to find a roofer to work on it.
Picking a roofer can be extremely difficult if you do not know what to look for. Why? The primary problem is there are a lot of handymen who call themselves roofers. If you use one of these, you run serious short and long term risks.
It rains one day during the summer. You notice you have a leak in the roof in one corner of the home. You think about getting it fixed, but blow it off. Hey, it is summer! Now fall is upon you and the fix is needed.
We are creatures of habit when we need help. What do we do? We ask our friends for recommendations. With home repairs, this often results in the local handyman. He does the repair for you, but it reappears during the second big storm.
You have learned a painful lesson. With roofs, only licensed roofers should be used. Now you have to find one. Not many are going to be willing to stand on a roof in the rain. The ones who will are going to charge a premium.
If your roof is seriously damaged, you are really going to be up the river without a paddle. The guy who fixed it the first time cannot be trusted. Since there is now water in the roof, you are going to need a bigger, more expensive repair to avoid mold problems.
At the end of the day, is there anything more important than the roof? What keeps the snow out? How about the wind and rain? If you need roofing work done, you are crazy if you use anyone other than a licensed roofer.
When you use a licensed roofer, you get someone who is insured and who should be willing to guarantee their work in writing. Yes, guarantee. They should also use materials that come with additional 30 or 40 year warranties.
Put another way, you have someone you can count on. If a problem does arise, you can find them and they will take care of the problem. When it is pouring rain and your roof is leaking, could there be anything better?
